Well it finally happened! I got a kidney!! It’s been a long 5yr wait. We had a few calls that just didn’t work out so I didn’t get too excited until they were rolling me to the OR. It’s surreal that I’ve been transplanted and released from the hospital in just 6 days!! The kidney was a little sleepy and slow to get started the first couple of days but this is normal when you have a deceased donor. By the third day it was off and running. UAB staff were fantastic from the surgeons to the housekeeping. I now have to stay in Birmingham for at least two weeks for labs and clinics then I will be able to come home. I’m some grateful for my donor. They don’t tell you much about them. I do know it was a fairly young kidney. I’m so thankful they decided to be an organ donor. Because of thier act of kindness I no longer need to depend on a machine to live. There’s no telling how many lives this person’s and their family’s decision has changed for the good!! I want to also thank anyone who has considered or tried to be a donor for me. I don’t have the words to express how appreciative I am for you to even try! Thanks to everyone for your prayers, well wishes and taking the time to check on me. It means so much to me. Lastly to my wife Kristy. I’ve done my best to not be a burden to her during this time of illness but she’s always my rock in sickness and health. She loves and cares so much for me. I couldn’t have made it without her! I’m so blessed! I can’t wait to experience this new lease on life!!
