Well it finally happened! I got a kidney!! It’s been a long 5yr wait. We had a few calls that just didn’t work out so I didn’t get too excited until they were rolling me to the OR. It’s surreal that I’ve been transplanted and released from the hospital in just 6 days!! The kidney was a little sleepy and slow to get started the first couple of days but this is normal when you have a deceased donor. By the third day it was off and running. UAB staff were fantastic from the surgeons to the housekeeping. I now have to stay in Birmingham for at least two weeks for labs and clinics then I will be able to come home. I’m some grateful for my donor. They don’t tell you much about them. I do know it was a fairly young kidney. I’m so thankful they decided to be an organ donor. Because of thier act of kindness I no longer need to depend on a machine to live. There’s no telling how many lives this person’s and their family’s decision has changed for the good!! I want to also thank anyone who has considered or tried to be a donor for me. I don’t have the words to express how appreciative I am for you to even try! Thanks to everyone for your prayers, well wishes and taking the time to check on me. It means so much to me. Lastly to my wife Kristy. I’ve done my best to not be a burden to her during this time of illness but she’s always my rock in sickness and health. She loves and cares so much for me. I couldn’t have made it without her! I’m so blessed! I can’t wait to experience this new lease on life!!

This morning, Jason got a call from UAB saying they had a kidney for him. We were supposed to get a call Friday morning letting us know if the transplant was a go or not and whether surgery would be Friday or Saturday as they were waiting on a room to open up. Unfortunately, UAB called tonight to let us know that when the surgeon took the patient to the OR, he determined that the patient could not donate (we don’t know why). Now we are in a waiting game again. This is one reason why living kidney donation is so important. Please consider sharing your spare. Complete the questionnaires below for UAB and/or Vanderbilt where Jason is listed.

In Mississippi, most of the 1000+ people on the transplant waiting list need a kidney. Many of us know someone who has been on dialysis for hours a week for years while waiting for a lifesaving transplant. We need everyone to educate themselves and register as a donor at www.RegisterMe.org, then discuss your decision with your loved ones. The ability to be a donor is a rare and precious gift that leaves a living legacy long after we are gone.

You can learn more about living donation at https://donatelife.net/donation/types/living-donation/

I haven’t been feeling great this week. I think my dry weight is off and I’ve been pulling too much fluid during dialysis. Just a reminder I still need a kidney. If you have ever considered being a living donor check out the UAB and Vanderbilt living kidney donor screener page. This is the first step in the process. There’s no charge for anything. Message me or Kristy if you have any questions. If would like to be anonymous you call the kidney centers and they can answer and questions. Thanks to all who have been praying for me!
