Marie turned to yoga about 12 years ago when her husband was diagnosed with early onset Parkinson’s and she has seen firsthand its therapeutic potential. Receiving her Yoga Alliance 200-hour teaching certification in 2010, Marie began teaching yoga at Lakeshore Foundation, serving seniors and those with chronic or disabling health conditions. Marie is keenly interested in how hatha yoga can aid healing and enhance aging. She completed the 50-hour program, Therapeutic Yoga for Seniors, with Carol Krucoff and Kimberly Carson at Duke Integrative Medicine and has studied Chair Yoga with India Henson. She is studying Yoga of Awareness for Chronic Pain with Kimberly and Jim Carson at Oregon Health and Science University. A recently retired school librarian with a zeal for lifelong learning, Marie invites all to join her exploring breath and mindful movement.

Riding the waves

How can yoga support you through difficult times? The ancient Indian text, Bhagavad Gita, describes “yoga as skill in action". Not simply exercises, yoga cultivates self-understanding, an ability to live skillfully and fruitfully through the daunting demands of life. Think of it as riding the wave...

Savoring your rituals

When we step on our yoga mat, we enter space – both physical and mental – for sustained attention to ourselves. Often, I invite students to lie down at the beginning of yoga practice and simply notice. Sometimes the act of getting to the mat can leave them a little breathless, a bit distracted o...

Gathering with purpose

We cross a threshold when we practice yoga together. Our intention? To leave the loud, often nervous chatter of the world – demands big and small – behind. We lay out our mats or set up our chairs, greet our neighbors, and begin. I teach in a variety of spaces - wellness centers, libraries, heal...

Strengthen your core

Strengthen your core. We hear this a lot in physical fitness but what does it mean? Misconceptions about where it is and what it does can inhibit our breathing and magnify back strain. Here are some core myths: Myth 1 - The core is all about our abs, specifically the re**us abdominis or “six-pack....

Taking baby steps

Feet. Unappreciated. Neglected. Taken for granted. Maybe even abused. I’ve never met anyone with anything nice to say about their feet. Yet we speak about feet all the time. We know what being caught flat footed means – unprepared, off balance. To have your feet on the ground signals stability. ...

Practicing gratitude

Gratefulness can quell our worries steadying ourselves to walk in this fractured, noisy world. Find a quiet space and a few minutes in your day to practice this meditation. Take a comfortable and dignified seat. Breathe in and out calmly and slowly. Pay attention to your immediate environment: what....

Seeking resplendence

Duncan and I recently saw two resplendent quetzals high up in the tree branches of the Monteverde Cloud Forest. With streaming tail feathers and shimmering, almost iridescent red, green and blue colors, this bird truly lives up to its name. Resplendent. I love that word. Life is full of resplendent....

Embrace learning in 2024

Light and inspiration come from different places - travel, reading, friendship, movement,... endless possibilities. I love looking at end of the year lists recommending books, movies, podcasts, and experiences. As 2023 rapidly ends, I offer a few books and podcasts that have influenced my yoga pract...

Future proof your balance

What throws us off balance? Distraction, stress, anxiety, fatigue, persistent pain, even hunger and thirst can influence how steady we are. And changes to our vision, feet, muscle mass can compound our balance issues as we age. Falls can have serious consequences for our independence and well-being....

Failure is part of the territory

FIFA’s Women’s Soccer World Cup is over. The U.S. made an early exit. The missed penalty kicks were painful. How do elite athletes execute their skills for optimal performance with all the internal and external pressures? How do they deal with losses? If asked, many would agree that managing the...
