Thank you to everyone who supported SOPH’s Fall Food Drive!
Because of your generosity, we were able to donate a large collection of plastic, paper, and reusable bags to Grace Klein, helping them sort and distribute food more efficiently. We also contributed a generous assortment of food items to the Community Food Bank of Central Alabama.
Your kindness truly makes a difference—thank you! 🙌

This past week, the UAB SOPH proudly participated in the American Public Health Association’s Annual Meeting in Washington, D.C., where faculty, staff, students, and alumni came together to advance public health under the theme: “Making the Public’s Health a National Priority.”

We were especially thrilled to reconnect with UAB alumni at a special event in D.C., which provided a meaningful opportunity to celebrate their achievements and strengthen our public health network.

Join the School of Public Health for Centers Spotlight: Public Health Opportunities Fair.

This event brings together the UAB Lister Hill Center for Health Policy, the UAB Sparkman Center for Global Health, the Center for the Study of Sexual and Gender Health, and the Center for the Study of Community Health. Students, staff, and faculty are invited to learn more about each Center’s programming, upcoming events, awards, and ways to get involved.

Food will be served, and attendees will also have the chance to take part in an open house tour of the new Center for the Study of Community Health in Room 131.

It’s homecoming y’all! 🐉✨ We’ve got not one but TWO fun ways to celebrate with the SOPH this week, and we want YOU to be part of it!

🍕 Thursday | 11–2 PM | Ryals Courtyard
Kick off the celebrations at our Pizza Party! Grab a slice, play some yard games, and show off your karaoke skills. It’s the perfect way to take a break, connect, and get in the homecoming spirit.

🎉 Friday | Homecoming Parade
Then, keep the fun going by walking in the parade with SOPH! Show your Blazer pride, cheer with your classmates, and help represent SOPH in one of the biggest events of the week.

📈 U.S. News & World Report has named the University of Alabama at Birmingham in the 2026 Best Colleges rankings, strengthening its position as one of the leading universities in the state. UAB climbed four spots to No. 132 out of 434 institutions in the Best National Universities category — placing it, once again, in the top third of ranked schools across the country.

This fall welcomes the inaugural cohort of the new DrPh in Preparedness Leadership program. The students gathered last week for their first residential visit, including orientation, a faculty panel, team-building activities, networking and touring the Jefferson County Emergency Management Agency.

Dr. Bertha Hidalgo, associate professor in the Department of Epidemiology and associate dean for access and engagement has been named President of the American College of Epidemiology (ACE). In this national leadership role, Dr. Hidalgo will guide ACE’s efforts to advance the science and practice of epidemiology, foster training and professional development and promote the application of epidemiologic research to improve population health. This appointment reflects both her longstanding contributions to cardiovascular and women’s health research and her commitment to strengthening the field of epidemiology through mentorship, collaboration and public engagement.
