Dr. Chiappetta, a board-certified orthopedic surgeon with specialized expertise in spine surgery and orthopedic trauma, brings nearly two decades of experience. Over the years, he has been recognized with multiple honors including NJ Monthly Top Doctor, the Select Surgeons Award for Top Spine Surgeon, and Castle Connolly’s Jersey’s Best Doctors. 🏆

He’s passionate about restoring function, relieving pain, and helping patients get through advanced surgical care.💪

What does the ACL actually do?
Why does it tear so easily?
And how do athletes come back from it?

Your ACL is a stabilizer not a mover.

Its job is to…
-stop the tibia from shifting forward
-control rotation during cutting and pivoting
-work with your quads, hamstrings, and hips to keep the knee stable at high speed

Most ACL tears happen with rotation, not straight-line movement.

And yes around 70% of ACL injuries in sport are non-contact, usually during planting, decelerating, or landing.

Once the ACL tears, it does not heal on its own because the torn ends can’t reconnect in a way that restores functional stability.

But recovery?
Rehab?
Return to sport?
Those are absolutely possible with the right plan.

Successful ACL rehab is built on:
-restoring full knee extension early
-rebuilding quad strength
-correcting landing + cutting mechanics
-passing objective return-to-sport tests
-addressing psychological readiness (a huge predictor of return)

Understanding your ACL is step one. Rebuilding the system around it is what gets athletes back.
