My favorite supervisees are those who are willing and able to engage in a thoughtful discussion about various topics, but who remain open to feedback. While this may seem like an obvious pick, it's easier said than done. It's easy for people to become defensive when they are being asked to think critically or change their practice in some way. But it is imperative that trainees learn to engage in a professional, respectful discourse while remaining open to feedback, new information, and other perspectives. What qualities do you look for during interviews for practicum/externship students, interns, postdocs, etc.?

Clinical supervisors provide tremendous value to trainees in providing exposure to, and guidance in, the practice of forensics as a specialization. While forensic coursework and other types of trainings (e.g., didactics, webinars, texts) can be valuable, nothing can replace working with a supervisor with a forensic background. They can provide trainees with opportunities to work on forensic cases in which they learn to apply forensic concepts and think critically about the issues. This is a skill that can only truly be learned and honed through experience.

I haven't introduced myself on here for a while so I thought I'd do that again. Big warm hello to all of you! My name is Dr. Pileggi-Valleen and I am a board certified forensic psychologist based out of Minnesota.

I have been practicing in the field of forensic psychology for over a decade, mostly in state and federal prisons, and in a state agency. In 2020, I started my private practice, Veritas Forensic Psychology. I spend most of my days reading records and reviewing discovery, interviewing and evaluating defendants and forensic patients in the civil and criminal justice systems, writing forensic reports, testifying, supervising, and running my business. The bulk of my work is in competency, criminal responsibility/insanity, risk assessment, patterned s*x offending, and civil commitment.

I'm also a wife and mother, and in my free time, I train in boxing and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. I enjoy traveling, cooking, reading, and gardening. I'd love to get to know you a little better, too. Comment below and tell me how you found my page and what you're looking for here.

While your potential income should not be the primary reason you go into any field, how much money you can make is, understandably, a common question. This depends on a lot of different factors (e.g., experience, state, place of employment, types of evaluations, board certification, etc.). However, research was recently done on this very topic. According to results of the survey, the total annual income of forensic psychologists in the US had a median of $125,000 -$149,999 and a mode of $100,000 -$124,999. While board certification is not required for a career as a forensic psychologist, there are many benefits. For instance, it is required for some positions at some agencies (e.g., To work at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN and for panel specialists at some insurance companies). Board certification may also lead to promotions in rank and higher pay (e.g., within the Department of Veterans Affairs, Department of Defense, Public Health Service). In general, it increases marketability and credibility. And on a more personal note, the process of studying for the exams really helps you master the material and boosts confidence.

Anecdotally, it seems that a lot of people are misdiagnosed with Bipolar Disorder, when the real problem appears to be related to mood, personality pathology, or poor frustration tolerance and limited coping skills. What diagnostic category do you find most confusing or to be commonly misdiagnosed?

First and foremost, if you would like to become a forensic psychologist, you must build a strong foundation in clinical psychology. This includes skills in interviewing, diagnosing, psychological assessment, and report writing. To achieve this, complete all the necessary steps toward becoming a licensed clinical psychologist first, while gaining experience with forensic populations and evaluations along the way.

After having worked with numerous supervisors, some of whom were excellent and others who left much to be desired, I can think of dozens of qualities I valued in my clinical supervisors. However, I really appreciated when they took the time to get to know me personally and supported me as an individual as well as a trainee. Life inevitably impacts our work, and it was nice to have the opportunity to share personal bumps in the road along the way and feel supported when it was needed. Additionally, it helped when supervisors made themselves available and were approachable, and didn't just tell me what to do to create a carbon copy of themselves, but helped me think critically and develop my own personal style. What qualities did you value most in your supervisors?
