What it’s done to you…
What’s it’s done is turn you inside out.
The waiting.
The pressure.
The stretching.
The final pause.
The last push.
You really thought you couldn’t, then, you did.
What’s it’s done to you…
What it’s done is bring you inside out.
From a buoyant playground to rushing waters around your ears.
The pressure, so much pressure.
The molding, is your head supposed to do this?
The final pause at the door of your first home, the look back before the last push.
The practice breaths to a brave first inhalation.
The cool air on your damp skin.
You thought you couldn’t, but then, you did.
She made a way out for you, with every bend of her body, every surrender of her breath.
Now you see who she is. Her face like a water color palette, her skin the first sun you know on yours.
And Him? You know him, his tender hello greets you as an old friend, the one whose gaze you know from within. You know he’ll take care of her, she’s going to be busy with you.
And them? They’re almost your size but a little bit bigger, better stay close to her for now, you like their warm smiles but they seem less steady on their feet.
And who is this? She’s scooped you up to test you. Of course you can hold her finger, you’ve been here for 20 minutes already! Step for her? If she insists. You know her too. She’s listening to you, speaking to you in soft tones telling you what she sees. Her hands feel familiar somehow like she’s felt the shape of you before.
What it’s done to both of you, to all of us, feels unnameable, sacred, transient.
It, is birth, and even though it happens everyday. It is never the same.
