Have you heard of PANS or PANDAS and wondered… what in the world is that? 🤔

In recent years, more parents and pediatricians have started recognizing conditions called PANS (Pediatric Acute-onset Neuropsychiatric Syndrome) and PANDAS (Pediatric Autoimmune Neuropsychiatric Disorders Associated with Streptococcal infections).

These conditions can cause sudden changes in a child’s behavior or nervous system function, often seemingly overnight.

Parents may notice things like:
• sudden OCD behaviors
• anxiety or panic attacks
• motor or vocal tics
• emotional outbursts or rage
• regression in skills
• trouble sleeping
• sensory sensitivities

When a child’s nervous system is overwhelmed or stuck in stress mode, it can show up in ways parents see every single day, like:

• repetitive movements or tics
• pacing or constant movement
• compulsive behaviors
• needing to touch objects multiple times or line things up
• strong sensory seeking or sensory sensitivities
• difficulty communicating or expressing emotions
• meltdowns when their system becomes overloaded

These are very common experiences for kids on the spectrum, and often they are signs that the nervous system is working overtime trying to regulate itself. 🤍
