When I sit with a client, I remind myself that my opinions and convictions have no place in that interaction. I become a blank slate. It’s taken a lot of practice to do this.
Before each session, I sit in a quiet place and reconnect to being an open source of love and gentleness. Each and every one of us are right where we are for reasons that only we can ever really understand. It is my intention to ACTIVELY LISTEN. I WANT to know what they are experiencing from their point of view. They become my teacher and the subject is them.
To do this, I can’t have preconceived opinions that might influence my understanding of what they are saying. I can’t know what they should do or how they should do it. I ask questions upon questions. It’s such a blessing not to have to have answers or to know what people should or shouldn’t do. The gift is that I get to have a break from all of that!!
The questions I ask are meant to help me understand what my client is feeling and why. We can play around with perspectives and different ideas and walk down all kinds of pathways of possibilities. I have learned the answers to some of the toughest problems are found this way….in a space of pure love and understanding and curiosity and trust. I hope that everyone gives this kind of listening a try. It’s absolutely beautiful! Try actively listening like this with your friends, your kids, your parents, your love and yes, even those you can’t agree with outside of this space. See the blessing of what happens for yourself.
