Helping find the true cause of your baby's reflux symptoms, USA

As an infant reflux consultant, I am passionate about providing support & comfort to parents as they navigate the challenges of reflux & colic symptoms experienced by their little ones. It breaks my heart to see babies in discomfort & parents feeling overwhelmed & helpless. I understand how important it is to address these issues quickly and effectively, & I am here to help you identify any underlying causes & provide guidance on how to improve symptoms. I am committed to working with you to find the best solutions for your baby to bring comfort & joy to both your baby, & your family. I am an osteopath by trade, with a strong interest in treating all things pregnancy, post-partum, & babies. I worked in Cambridge, UK as a registered osteopath for 9 years. I loved working alongside other healthcare practitioners - physiotherapists, podiatrist, acupuncturist, nutritionist - all of whom had something to contribute to the overall health & well-being of our patients. When my husband’s job gave us a chance to live & work in America, although I was unable to continue to treat osteopathically, the opportunity came to try & begin helping families in a different way – less hands-on therapy & more of a listening & supportive role.

✨ New Blog Post ✨

Reflux medications can be a hot topic, so here is a little more detail for you.

There are many causes of reflux & some can make your baby more uncomfortable than others, depending on the associated symptoms they are experiencing. But will a reflux medication actually help them? Do you know what that medication is & how it works? Did your paediatrician actually tell you about the drug they were recommending?

Approximately 7% of all infants across the USA are diagnosed with gastroesophageal reflux (GER) or gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) each year, with 2-6% being prescribed associated reflux medications.

This might not sound like a lot, but when you consider how immature their ever-developing brain, nervous system & gut are, we must ask are we unnecessarily exposing this babies to substances that aren't even addressing the actual cause of their symptoms, like baby reflux? What will happen when they come off of that reflux medication? Is the reflux going to come back?

I am not a doctor, so I cannot & will not tell you whether your baby should or shouldn't take a reflux medication - what I can do, is help you understand why your baby has reflux, what the cause might be, & to educate you on what each medication is so you can make an informed decision for your baby's health.

Navigating life postpartum whilst trying to build a small business from home hasn't been easy, & there have been many times I have had to choose family life over my business, but I really hope that this is the beginning of turning all of my ideas & thoughts into useful tools, workshops, resources & further support for families struggling with baby reflux, colic, allergies & so much more.

And finally, a huge thank you to one of those patient women in the business, .martin, for helping turn my postpartum chaos & a million post-it notes into a reality 🫶

✨ Baby Food ✨

Ok, hear me out.

Not all foods are created equal. There are some that are easier to digest than others, & some that are healthier for you than others.

When it comes to babies starting solids, it is SO important that we actually acknowledge that their little bodies, especially their digestive systems, are not at the same developmental stage that ours are as adults. Their immature gut needs time to grow, learn & be nurtured for them to create an optimal microbiome & a happy, healthy digestive system.

If certain foods are problematic for your baby, they can cause irritation & damage to the gut, reduce absorption of nutrients, ferment in the gut & produce gas as a byproduct, making them uncomfortable, fussy & sometimes inconsolable (as would I be!).

👉 The main food source for development & growth for babies is healthy FATS
🥑 Fats are easier for babies to digest & absorb, making them perfect first foods
🧀 This includes foods like coconut oil, eggs, butter, cheese, avocado, fish & nuts

When we start to really pay attention to this, understanding where their bodies are right now, it can help guide what foods we introduce & when to reduce the likelihood of pain & discomfort. It's about what is BEST for them at this moment, which will change & evolve as they grow.

Symptoms that could indicate your baby is struggling with digestive discomfort include:
🌻 Increased reflux or spit up, especially curdled milk
🌻 Painful trapped gas or bloated tummy
🌻 Constipation or diarrhoea
🌻 Increased fussiness, squirming or hard to settle easily after a feed
🌻 Interrupted sleep or short naps

✨ Feeding & Reflux ✨

It's so easy to just focus on the thing that you see, especially if it's not an easy process, but it's rarely ever just one thing that's contributing to the difficult experience.

The body is the same; everything is connected in one way or another through muscles, fascia, joints, ligaments, nerve pathways, blood vessels & more.

Feeding is no different. It takes more than just the mouth or the tongue to allow babies to feed, so why do we often overlook the symptoms elsewhere in the body & assume it's all about the mouth?

A baby that is struggling with a deep latch & coordinated suck-swallow-breathe pattern is more likely to be letting air in during a feed, spilling milk from the mouth, relying on their cheeks & jaw muscles to maintain the latch & getting tired & frustrated at the breast or bottle as a result - all of which could be adding to their reflux 👀

I saw a great reel recently (of course I can't find it now to attach 🫣) by a lactation consultant who was reminding parents & providers to look at the hips, not just just the lips, & I really loved it because it is exactly what I try to tell parents too!

In order to help how the oral tissues function during feeding or using a pacifier to soothe, we need to know that their body is able to engage, contract, stabilise & move freely in other areas of the body in order to relax into that feeding position. Their core stability, pelvic floor muscles, leg strength...it all helps them with feeding!

I can help you look at the whole body, all of the symptoms they're experiencing & help you start to understand why they're unsettled or uncomfortable, & how we can start to improve their symptoms, together 🙏

✨ Did You Know... ✨

Reflux, put quite simply, is the regurgitation of the stomach contents (milk, food & sometimes stomach acid) back up into the oesophagus, or food pipe, & out through the mouth as spit up or vomit.

There are many factors that can influence how much a baby gets reflux, but for me, if they are unable to keep down milk in those newborn stages especially, then we really should be asking why.

👉 If you spit up your morning coffee every day, wouldn't you want to know why?!

I want to know your birth story, listen to all of your highs & lows of parenting a newborn, & hear all of your concerns...all of it. Every baby’s journey is different & their symptoms are unique to them.

I really believe the body should be nurtured as a whole, so understanding where they are developmentally, finding the actual cause of their discomfort & supporting them back to happy & healthy again is everything.

📢 Reflux is common, not normal.

They don't have to suffer until they grow out of it 🙏 ............................

There are many, many symptoms that a newborn baby can experience in their early weeks of life. It really all starts back in utero, but we typically see things in our little ones once they're showing signs of discomfort.

This may look like an unsettled, uncomfortable & sometimes just generally unhappy baby 😢

Their little bodies are constantly learning, changing, developing & growing, & this process can come with lots of different signs & symptoms if there are imbalances or different stressors within their bodies.

❓ Did any of these statements surprise you?
❓ Does your baby fit any of them now you know?

✨ Did You Know... ✨

There are many, many symptoms that a newborn baby can experience in their early weeks of life that can cause them to be unsettled. This includes symptoms like reflux, silent reflux & colic symptoms.

When we see these symptoms, we need to be considering the actual CAUSE of them, not just 'diagnosing reflux' & telling parents that their baby will be fine because "they'll soon grow out of it" (FYI, not helpful advice at all!).

👉 Food sensitivities, including allergies & intolerances, often start to develop by 3 months old. When the immune system is trying to protect the body from potentially harmful substances that enter through the mouth, your baby might start to have increased reflux & become much more uncomfortable.

Symptoms you might see include:
🥑 Skin changes, like rashes, hives or eczema
🍓 Chronic congestion, runny nose, sneezing or coughing
🌽 Changes to bowel movements, including green or mucus

👉 Silent reflux is when the regurgitated milk & acid comes up into the food pipe & throat, but it isn't visibly seen as vomit. As a result, it is difficult to recognise this as the cause of discomfort & is frequently misdiagnosed as something else.

Does it surprise you to know that it can cause ear infections, congestion & coughing?

Other symptoms you might see include:
👶 Arching their back
👶 Frequent hiccups
👶 Swallowing or gulping when they are asleep

✨ Which One Did You Search? ✨

Was this you at 10pm or 3am?
I know all mums remember those late night internet searches, just trying to get ANY answers, tips, tricks, snippets of advice or that magic answer that would miraculously stop them crying & go down for a sleep! You just need a time out!

One thing these questions all have in common though?
👉 If you take the time to identify the root cause, you will likely see that many of these symptoms begin to resolve without you even trying.

For example, if your baby is arching their back a lot, often inconsolable & only napping short stretches, it could be silent reflux. By supporting your baby with these symptoms as we work on resolving the cause of their silent reflux, they begin to cry less, are more comfortable lying on their backs, don't need to be held to soothe & should start to link sleep cycles more for longer naps & night sleep because (& here's the important bit) there aren't in pain or discomfort anymore!

👅 Silent reflux could be caused by laryngomalacia, poor oral function (including a tongue tie, a low resting tongue posture & mouth breathing), or aerophagia (excessive air swallowed during a feed).

Unsure why your little one is unsettled or having difficulty with sleep or soothing? Ask me how I can help & save yourself those late night panic searches for helpful tips! 🙏

✨ Client Feedback ✨

It is always such a joy to get feedback from parents after we have worked together.

This little guy had been through the ringer since birth, but his mum has been his biggest advocate for getting him the help he needs to be comfortable again - she was not settling for "he'll grow out of it" as answer! 👏👏............................

✨ Reflux Top Tips ✨

As with everything in life, each baby will have their own specific symptoms that need addressing & baby reflux is not different. There are, however, some simple things that can help in the day-to-day of the chaos.

Reflux is a symptom & is usually part of a bigger, more complex collection of symptoms that have an underlying cause. Small, consistent changes can start to support them back to happy, healthy little babes while we address the root cause.

1️⃣ Lying them on their side is such an underrated position & yet so beneficial. It helps with head control & building muscle strength both sides, it's engaging their core in different ways, it's helping them towards rolling over, it develops their vestibular system (the part of the nervous system responsible for balance & coordination), how the eyes interact with the space around them, & so much more!

2️⃣ Get them out of those containers! This includes carriers, car seats, strollers, bouncers, rockers...anything that keeps them in a curved position for their spines. As gorgeous as that newborn scrunch is when you pick them up from the car seat, their muscles need encouraging to stretch, relax & unwind so they are more balanced between the front & back of the body. This can contribute to their dislike of tummy time. Being all tight & scrunched up can put pressure on the stomach & can make their reflux worse.

3️⃣ Consistency, consistency, consistency. If you have some stretches or some oral play exercises to be doing with your little one, then doing them little & often will always be more beneficial than once every now & then. Bonus this way is they take you less time when you do them, so you can fit them into your day to day easily. You can't go to the gym once a month & expect instant results - you have to put in the work.

I hope these are helpful. If you're looking for more specific advice, I'm always here to listen 🤗
