Fever, lack of appetite, cough, runny nose… what happens when you’re trying to sleep train while your little one is feeling under the weather? 🤧

It’s something we all have to deal with at one time or another - your child is sick, they’re all out of whack and you’re left wondering what this will do to your sleep training efforts.

First and foremost - if you’re just starting with sleep training - Pause your sleep training efforts.

You’re not going to get your desired results if your little one isn’t feeling like themselves, go ahead and give them extra snuggles and make sure they’re dressed properly to sleep when they have a fever (a lighter breathable fabric is recommended)

For a child who’s gone through sleep training and is sleeping independently - they have a slightly different approach needed - you want to support them and give them the extra cuddles they want/need but you also don’t want to start a new habit or sleep crutch where they’ll rely on your to fall asleep all the time.

Extra sleep may also be needed while your little one is sick - I’m not saying he/she will need to sleep 24 hours per day but follow their cues - if they usually take two 1 hour naps per day, you might have them sleep 1.5 hours twice per day while they’re feeling out of sorts.

Hydration, nutrition, and medication (follow your doctor’s recommendations for meds) are also helpful to help manage your little one’s symptoms.

Once your little one is on the mend then you’ll be able to resume your sleep training efforts. It’s about progress, not perfection!

You got this!

I haven’t made an intro post in such a long time and I wanted to give my followers some info on who I am!

First and foremost…

Hi!!! Welcome!! My name is Julie, owner of

I live in Eastern Canada with my family:

My husband Louis
My daughter Audrey
And my fur daughter Bowie!

I’m bilingual and speak both English and French fluently!

I LOVE music, you can either find me singing around the house or listening to music most of the day!

I started my sleep consulting business in Sept 2021 and have been having such an amazing time since!

Here’s some info on Louis:

Lover of the gym and all things music - he plays guitar and can be found playing song for Audrey our daughter!

Audrey is a year old (she just turned 1 at the start of Feb!) she loves to laugh and play.

Her favourite things to do are to dance, run around, woof while pointing to any animal and eat!

Bowie loves sleep, eat cheese and bell peppers - she can usually be found next to the window trying to have conversations with dogs that are walking by.

Her all time faves are t-r-e-a-t-s and r-i-d-e-s…

I’d love to learn more about you!

Some babies at this age are ready to transition to 2 naps, others still require 3 naps!

The nap transition will happen when your baby is ready, it’s not a cookie cutter thing!

Here are some quick facts about 8 month old sleep:

- Hours of sleep in a 24 hour period: 12-15 hours
- Day sleep maximum: 3 hours
- Wake window: 2.5 to 3 hours
- Total naps: 2-3
- While your little one is still on a 3 nap cycle - the last nap might look more like a catnap. That’s ok it’ll get your little one to get to a reasonable bedtime!
- Possible regression linked to learning new things (crawling/sitting/standing) LOTS of day practice can help you get through it!
- Sleep regression may also be linked to learning object permanence so your little one can actually be missing you! Lots of extra snuggles throughout the day can help this issue!

Not all kids go through a sleep regression at this age - if they do they can go through one at various degrees.

Some are barely noticeable and others can be quite a doozy!

If you’re struggling with getting your little one to sleep and staying asleep don’t hesitate to reach out!

Let’s jump on a free 15 minute call and see if we’re a good match to work together!🥰

The sleepless nights, having to hold your little one for all naps, needing to go p*e but worrying your baby will wake if you move…

So you start to wonder… WHEN can I start sleep training my baby?😫

After 4 months of age is the recommended time to start sleep training!

Now this doesn’t mean you can’t start healthy sleep habit from the start - you absolutely can!

✨ From birth you can:

- Keep an eye on wake windows and the total amount of sleep your little one gets in 24 hours.
- Set up a consistent sleep space that helps rectify day/night confusion.
- You can wait a minute or two before going to get your baby when he/she starts crying.
- Create a safe sleep space for your child, one that can reduce to risk of SIDS.

✨ After 4 months of age you can:

- Start implementing more concrete independent sleep strategies.
- Wait a bit longer before going to see your little one when they wake crying.
- Potentially attempt naps in their own room (not necessary - but some parents like doing this)
- Break sleep crutches or props that have crept their way into your life since birth. (These can be things such as feeding to sleep, bouncing/swinging to sleep, being rocked to sleep etc.)
- Create a routine for sleep - at bed and nap time, it doesn’t have to last forever - it just has to be something consistent that lets your child know that sleep time is coming.

When approaching sleep training it’s not about the cry it out method, it’s about implementing things that make sense for you and your family/parenting style.

Time and time again I hear the fear and link of people thinking:
Sleep Training = Cry It Out.

No. Just No.

Does this mean your child will never shed a tear through sleep training?

Unfortunately, no.

But the techniques I teach are some that make both your and your child feel supported throughout the process!💗

Are you ready to get back to getting restful sleep?

Are you lost on how to go about it?

That’s ok! I’m here for you!👏

The witching hour is all to real- here are tips on how to deal with your newborn crying when all their needs have been met! 👏🏻

The 5 S's Method:
Good for ages: 0-3 months
Developed by: Dr.Harvey Karp (author of The Happiest Baby on the Block)

This technique helps your newborn feel like they’re back in the womb.🤰

By using gentle rocking, shushing, a sequence has been created by Dr.Karp to help settle your little one. It can be very effective - but care needs to be taken to follow the steps in order!

✨The 5 S’s in order are:

1- Swaddling
2- Side/Stomach position (used only to calm your baby while in your arms, you should never place a newborn on their side/stomach to sleep)
3- Shushing
4- Swinging
5- Sucking

Your baby needs to be held close to you so you can do effective shushing- it can take practice to do this technique effectively but it’s amazing how settled your little baby can be when you do it right!

*This is not a sleep training technique, as you wouldn’t sleep train a 0-3 month old, but it can absolutely help settle your child - think witching hour or middle of the night wakings when he/she has all their needs met.

*Arms in swaddling for sleep should be discontinued when your little is 8 weeks old or when he/she shows signs of rolling.

Check out my stories for a demo of the 5S’s technique!

Did you know your baby being too hot or too cold can increase the risk of SIDS?

I got a DM last week asking how a baby should be dressed when temperatures outside are starting to get lower.

I figured more parents would have the same question!👏

Hats should be avoided as they can come off and cause a possible suffocation hazard. Mitts can be used but only when it’s very cold. (See chart for info)

✨How do I recommend you keep an eye on your child’s room/body temp?

For the room temp- I suggest getting a small thermostat from the store, one that registers temperature and room humidity (is it not humid enough? Then you can use a humidifier!)

You can place it in a central spot of the room, ours is on the nightstand next to the rocking chair.

Feel your child’s nape (neck/hairline area) to see if it’s hot/humid or cold when you get them after they’ve had a nap.

If it’s humid/sweaty then you know it was too hot in the room or they had too many layers on.

For example, if my child wears a fleece pyjama to go to bed I know I’ll use a thinner sleep sack, but if I use a cotton pyjama, she has a thicker sleep sack. (0.5 TOG is her thin one, and 1-1.5 TOG is her thick one)

✨What is a TOG?

TOG is a unit of measure that says how thick/warm a sleep sack is. They range from 0.5 TOG to 3 TOG.

See the label of your sleep sack to see what TOG yours is. You could also check the manufacturer’s website to get more TOG info.

I consistently keep my daughter’s room between 20.5-21.5 Celsius (68.9-70.7 Fahrenheit) so it makes it easy to know how to dress her!

I know it’s hard when regressions hit and all you can say is: “UGH PLEASE SLEEP!”😫

The lack of sleep can make it that we get to a point where we’ll just do anything to get our little one to sleep.

✨Examples of “bad” habits that might creep in are:

- Feeding to sleep
- Rocking to sleep
- Holding them while they sleep
- Bouncing to sleep
- Constantly having to go see them to re-insert their pacifier

✨Are you wondering why I keep putting “bad” in quotation marks?

A common misconception with sleep training is that we just leave our child in their crib to cry the whole night.

No. Just no.

There’s a happy medium and we just have to find what will work with your particular child.

They’re only young once and I must say that I rock/cuddle my girl multiple times per day every. single. day.

✨To help reduce these “bad” habits it’s all about timing and consistency:

- Feeding to sleep? Shift your feeding to the start of your bedtime routine.

- Rocking to sleep? Rock while you’re reading/singing to your little one and place them to bed drowsy but awake.

- Constant crying because their Paci fell out? Give them 5 minutes to try and get it back in on their own, if not then go in. With time they’ll get the hang of getting it back in on their own and you won’t have to go see them to help!

If the Paci keeps being an issue it might be time to cut ties with it.

It’s all case dependent!

How are you currently dealing with your regression?
Pushing through or developing a new “bad” habit?

Imagine working so hard on something but then turning around and having all the progress ruined (or feel like it’s ruined)😫

When it comes to sleep training, it’s 1000% a team effort.

There might be one parent that takes the lead more than the other BUT the non-leading parent needs to be supportive and be willing to give a helping hand.

As a Certified sleep coach I'm able to give you amazing support when sleep training your little one but also having the support of a partner makes things progress so much quicker!

It’s possible to get good results with having only one parent taking over sleep training, BUT if the other parent/caregiver resorts to the old methods to deal with night wakings or naps then it makes any progress go at a snails pace.

Imagine feeling like you’re treading in water and there’s nowhere to hang onto to catch your breath.😭

Having that consistency from all parties helps make sleep training so much quicker.

When all parties work as a team then your child isn’t getting mixed messages. So the “new” way gets to be their norm in no time at all! 👏

Let me know below- if you were to sleep train, would you and your significant other be all in? Do you think there would be some resistance?

Drop a ✨ in the comments if you're ready to see amazing progress in your little one's sleep!

It’s that dreaded time that comes around twice a year, but what if it doesn’t have to be that dreadful?👏

Here are 3 different methods to navigate time change:

1️⃣ The "Gradual" approach:

You can shift your child’s schedule 10 mins per day for the week prior to the time change (so when the time change comes they’ll be right back on track!)

This is a good approach for a child who is sensitive to straying from their sleep schedule.

It gives his or her body time to adjust bit by bit.

2️⃣ The "Do Nothing" approach:

The day of time change you just wake baby up at the new time and keep going about your day.

Some kids don’t mind having this approach and kind of just keep going like nothing happened.

Others need days to adjust after doing the “do nothing” approach and that’s ok!

3️⃣ The "Hybrid" approach:

For those who have kids that aren’t quite ok with doing the change all at once and the kids who aren’t totally sensitive to minute changes.

With this approach you can do a 20-30 minute shift 3 days before the time change and complete the process when the time changes.

💗 Let me know in the comments- what approach are you going to be using on your little one?

Naps might be decreasing this month from 3-2 (for some babies it can be in the next month or two, and that’s ok!)

What’s going on with your baby at this age and what is good practice for this age?

- Your baby’s ideal wake window is 2.75 hrs (+/-30 mins)
- The max amount of sleep during the day should be around 3 to 3.5 hours.
- Total Sleep (Naps+Night sleep) should be about 12-15 hours.
- Try to keep your little one on a consistent schedule to keep his/her’s internal clock regular.
- Have a solid bedtime routine (lasting about 20 minutes) and a mini nap bedtime routine (5-10 mins)
- Lay baby down awake for all sleep (drowsy but awake) - tears will probably happen if you’re just starting to do this, but that’s ok! It's not about leaving them alone to cry, we're there to support them while they learn!

If your little one is busy trying to learn to stand on their own, then make sure to practice lots during the day! (Peep my stories for some tips on practice!)

Keep an eye on clues that your little one is ready to go from 3 to 2 naps:

- Naps get shorter and shorter, usually only lasting 20-25 minutes (especially the last nap of the day)
- Baby is able to stay awake longer between nap times.
- Baby fights going down for a nap and is more and more difficult to get to sleep.
- Baby totally refuses to nap.
- Baby is waking early in the morning, especially if 3 naps are given but baby is ready for 2.

*This schedule is a base schedule, your baby might not follow this exact schedule. Adjust accordingly!

Need help figuring out what your child’s sleep schedule should be or are you having a hard time getting him/her to fall asleep independently?

Let me introduce my sweet little one Audrey, she’s a tiny 2 week old sweetie here.💗

Fast forward 8 months and our hearts are still melting everyday!

She’s the reason I got so interested in all things sleep, I had been doing safe sleep practices since birth, trying to navigate the day/night confusion and then the 4 month regression hit.

I thought I was losing it.

My once amazing sleeper was struggling especially at night, where I would have to go in 5-6 times in the first 2-3 hours.

After doing research and pulling myself together I started thinking of it logically.

How did I have success before?

Why is she waking up so often?

Am I the one creating bad habits?

This is when I decided that this was something I was being called to do. To help parents in the same situation as I was.

The troubleshooting aspect of sleep training is so important, it’s not about ignoring your child or letting them cry for hours on end.

It’s about tuning into their cues and realizing that they’re trying to tell us something!

After getting through the 4 month regression I decided to look into taking my Pediatric Sleep Consultant certification. It was hard work doing the course work while taking care of a little one but it being something I loved to learn about made it so much easier!

I truly cherish each client I work with and absolutely love being able to help them navigate the sleep world and help the whole family get back to sleeping with ease!

There are a lot of new faces here - let me know a bit about yourself below!
