The Lancet sat with Dr. Michelle Morse to discuss her role with the NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene and her work to reduce racial inequities in areas where discriminatory practices adversely affect patient care.

Morse strongly believes approaches to tackle health inequities should “consider the long history of racism in our society, and acknowledge the racialised pattern of health outcomes, and then act in a way that directly addresses those racial patterns and impacts, so that the action we take is specifically for groups who have experienced historical marginalisation and disadvantage.”

There are too many times when attempts to address health disparities are designed at the top of the bureaucracy and ignore community views and opinions. Historically, instead of going to harmed populations and including their thinking in the remedy, they are completely cut out of the picture.”

Cass Georges plays an instrumental role for the Healing ARC by coordinating community engagement and organizing Wisdom Councils. Cass and the Healing ARC are defining what authentic community engagement can be.
