Looking ahead into 2021 ✨...
It’s tough to put the events of the past year into words. It is important to both acknowledge the hardships while being grateful for the blessings that this year has brought. Let’s not forget the many global issues that have been brought to light. Let’s continue to fight these battles with the same determination and strength. We are excited to see what’s in store for the Amata Project in 2021. Happy New Year to all 🤍

Today is Human Rights Day. As COVID-19 still rages across the world, taking the time to recognize the importance of continuing to fight for the human rights of all is more relevant than ever. It is critical that we take a stand against the issues that violate the human rights of our fellow global citizens everywhere. Let’s build back a better world together by educating ourselves on these issues and joining each other in this fight.

The Japanese town of Yahaba sets an important example on how to lead from the emerging future and move away from downloading past patterns of society. Within all the current issues of our time (social justice, education, poverty, healthcare, climate change, etc.), there is a future waiting to emerge that diverges from repeating past patterns and involves creating the world that we want to live in 10, 20, 50 years from now...

It is not until we break away from these past patterns of downloading, denying, blaming, and ignoring the problem that we will truly be able to generate a future that solves these problems and upgrades society to a new level of collaboration, co-creating, and eco-system awareness.

The mission of The Amata Project is to take an eco-system level approach to healthcare, particularly women's health, and create from what is waiting to emerge. We take an awareness-based approach to collaborating, co-evolving, and crystallizing this idea of an interdependent global web of good health and well-being. This is the approach required to solve these 21st century problems we now face. This is the approach that will allow us to sense and let come what is waiting to emerge. One of the growing side effects of the global COVID-19 pandemic is the significant increase in child labor that has come as a result of school closures and economic hardship. Particularly across the developing world, young children provide income to their families by searching through garbage dumps for recyclable plastic and working on cocoa plantations. Even more heartbreaking is the surge in young girls being sent into s*x work by their own families as a result of these hardships..

It is critical that we spread awareness of the growing surge in child labor and the devastating impact it can have on a child’s health and education. This is a consequence of the pandemic that can only be met by the spread of awareness, the commitment of local and national leadership, and economic relief to these communities.

With the start of the new school year, students all around the world are feeling the impact of COVID-19 on their education. Many of the students that will experience the greatest difficulties in continuing their education during a global pandemic are those who already face disadvantages when it comes to receiving quality education. Countries everywhere have struggled to find the balance between allowing students to return to school while also continuing to keep everyone safe from the virus.

Despite these difficulties, students' excitement for the upcoming school year remains strong..

At just 11 years old, Marco is a student from Haiti who recognizes that he will probably need to work even harder this year to succeed in his studies.

In Malawi, Tiyamike is 16 years old and already finding it difficult to continue her progress in school as she feels disconnected from her teachers. She is excited for the upcoming school year and vows to do her part in preventing the spread of the virus throughout schools.

Lastly, in Rwanda, Denise is only 15 years old but is the head of her family's household following the death of her mother. In addition to her responsibilities as a student, she now has the responsibility of taking care of her five siblings. She recognizes the need for EMPOWERMENT and SUPPORT to work hand in hand to improve her family's living conditions.

As we move into October, let's reflect on students all around the world just like Marco, Tiyamike, and Denise and let's all do our part to stop the spread of the virus so that these students are able to access the education they deserve.

As the school year approaches, PIH reached out to students in our social support programs to learn about their hopes, dreams and concerns for the upcoming year.

Over 200,000 people in the United States alone have now died from Covid-19. This is equivalent to over 65 September 11th attacks. This is greater than the total number of Americans killed in battle in the most recent wars combined. There are approximately 3 deaths from Covid-19 every minute in the United States at this current rate...

Let’s not think of this as just a number. Let’s think of this as 200,000 women, children, mothers, husbands, sons, neighbors, friends and frontline workers. There is a face and a story behind each one of those 200k deaths. It is our responsibility to stop that number from continuing to rise. We all know what we need to do...

Your lifelong fight for women to be included in every decision will not be forgotten. The best way we can honor you is to carry on this fight. Let’s educate and empower our girls to create more leaders and decision makers. Let’s expand this fight for women’s equality by ensuring that every girl has a fair chance of having a seat at the decision making table. Let’s work to provide every girl a quality education and access to sufficient healthcare. Let’s continue the legacy of RBG.

"Covid-19 has become one of the most effective and impactful teachers of our time. It’s providing an advanced lesson on systems thinking with the planet’s 7.8 billion citizens as students. Yes, some of us have already learned these lessons intellectually. But now our bodies have too. We are acutely aware of our global interconnectedness. We are many, and we are one. We breathe the same air. We drink the same water. We walk the same earth. We enact the same global web of social, economic, and cultural connections. You thought it didn’t matter to us what happens on the other side the globe?"

Above, Otto Scharmer of the Presencing Institute sums up the most important lesson we must learn from Covid-19: we are all one global web of existence.

The mission of The Amata Project is built on the foundational belief that the health of every woman on this planet impacts the health of any other woman, anywhere in the world. Now that the impact of this interconnected web has unfolded directly in front of us, we must reconstruct our systems to adapt to this interconnected web. We believe that begins with the health and well-being of all citizens of this globe.

Cylian is only 12 years old but has had to fight for her life in battling multidrug-resistant TB. She is a true warrior and an inspiration. Now she hopes to study law abroad so that she can return to Sierra Leone and help her country.

Cylian is an incredible example of one of the guiding principles that The Amata Project is based on, which is that if you help a girl she will help her community. Partners in Health was able to save Cylian's life and now she wishes to do the same for others.

Thanks to investments from the Sierra Leonean government and PIH in multidrug-resistant tuberculosis treatment, 13-year-old Cylian Kargbo survived the disease. She's become an advocate for TB patients locally.
