Happy Thanksgiving!
My hooman is thankful for and wants me to remind you of a few things:
-It is ok to take a break if you need to. Holidays can be overwhelming and it is important to take care of our mental health.
-If you get comments and/or questions about your appearance, you are allowed (and encouraged) to say that you don’t want to talk about that, and to change the subject.
-The amount of food around you can be overwhelming. One thing that helped Alison is serving food in a buffet style. Having the food separate from the table meant that Alison did not have to look at the food aside from what was on her plate. Plus, it left more room on the table for decorations!
-Thanksgiving is definitely a food-centric holiday. But there are other aspects to focus on, too. You can watch the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, volunteer at a soup kitchen, make handprint turkeys, or make a gratitude list!
-If you are struggling after the meal, offer to help with the dishes! Maybe even put some music on!
-Finally, be gentle with yourself. Maybe today is not the day to focus on conquering fear foods or take on new challenges.
I’m thankful for my hooman, toys, food, and love. Alison is thankful for family (including me of course!), friends, and the supportive people in her life.
What are you thankful for?
