It's still snowing in most of Massachusetts, so please, stay safe while shoveling snow! ❄️

After any storm, there’s an uptick in fractures due to falling and slipping on ice, strained back muscles. And at Shields, one of the top reasons that patients have an MRI is pain in their lower back and specifically for lumbar disc displacement – a condition that can be directly related to an activity that puts a lot of pressure on your back, like shoveling.

Make sure to have proper shoveling form:
✅ Bend from the hips and knees and lift with your legs
✅ Turn your entire body if you need to rotate (don't twist!)
✅ Keep the shovel close to your body
✅ Don't forget to pace yourself, and hydrate!

Understanding your risk of heart disease is the first step to attaining better heart health. Risk factors such as high blood pressure or cholesterol generally don’t have obvious signs or symptoms so it is important to see your provider for a thorough checkup and risk assessment. And, due to new technological advances, cardiac MRI is widely used to diagnose numerous cardiovascular conditions.
