See You @ & Events:
It has been a busy season for me, gearing up for ASHA & working with American Board of Swallowing and Swallowing Disorders and for loads of social media advertising.

I am not presenting at this ASHA, but find me at The Swallow Symposium Wednesday, Meet & Greet Thursday, and the Specialty Board booth #3924, and more.
Info below:

1. The Swallow Symposium (Wednesday afternoon & evening before ASHA)

2 great courses
Free, but register now:

On this - we can reinforce research that is "Implementation Science," which reaches out, collaborates, and includes & communities from the start! Read more about & examples in this blog: https://swallowstudy.com/3-oral-health-updates-actions/

Excerpt:
"...Oral Health Example from an Indigenous Community:
We were fortunate (at our Society meeting) to hear an example of implementation science when Shauna Hachey shared her session on: “Oral health across the lifespan: Examples of mobilizing knowledge through interprofessional collaboration. Bridging Research and Practice.” Ms. Hachey is an Associate Professor at Dalhousie Faculty of Dentistry, School of Dental Hygiene - in Canada. She demonstrated community-led partnerships with the Mi’kmaq community to create a children’s book promoting oral health. The Mi’kmaq Indigenous / First Nation people live in the territory of Mi’kma’ki that extends from northeastern Maine to Canada’s Atlantic provinces (Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island, parts of Newfoundland), and the Gaspé Peninsula of Quebec.

Learn more about this community’s stories and the Baby Smiles Dental Health project and book: Baby Smiles: Weskewikwa’sit mijua’ji’j. Project by: Tui’kn Partnership with illustrations by Loretta Gould.

Shauna Hachey noted:

“Oral health improves with behavioral change. Implementation science, providing the knowledge and tools to enable behavioral change, can make a difference.”

Ms. Hachey recommended an online comprehensive oral hygiene toolkit called: Brushing Up on Mouth Care (www.brushingup.ca). ..."

✨ It’s time to take the RAD out of Radiation‑Associated Dysphagia!
Check out this blog:
https://swallowstudy.com/take-the-rad-out-radiation-associated-dysphagia/
By Allison Bartholow, MS, MS, CCC-SLP & Karen Sheffler, MS, CCC-SLP, BCS-S of SwallowStudy.com

✨ Radiation treatments for head and neck cancers—especially those tied to HPV-positive tumors—can deliver a lifesaving cure, but also bring a hidden long‑term cost: difficulty swallowing, or RAD.

✨ These issues range from the immediate pain and dryness of mucositis and xerostomia, to chronic muscle stiffness, fibrosis, nerve damage, and even silent aspiration years after treatment ends.

✨ What feels like recovery months out can unfortunately give way to late RAD, a serious and often unrecognized issue that can develop five or more years later as tissues stiffen and nerves weaken

✨ Early detection and tailored interventions are key to managing RAD and improving life quality.

✨ Speech‑language pathologists (SLPs) can use assessments like video swallow studies (VFSS or FEES) to pinpoint swallowing impairments, then suggest strategies—like swallow exercises.

Our Story

Karen Sheffler, MS, CCC-SLP, BCS-S is a board certified specialist in swallowing and swallowing disorders (dysphagia). She loves contributing to the field by raising awareness & sharing research/resources/new products. She can help clinicians know when new research or a new product is clinic-ready. She accomplishes this awareness-building through the following: managing her website and blog, attending and networking at conferences, collaborating across disciplines, helping researchers increase awareness of their work, staying active on social media, writing, lecturing, giving webinars, and helping students and new clinicians. Karen works with industry as a dysphagia expert. She also puts her knowledge and experience to good use as a dysphagia expert witness in litigation.
