Dear Friend of Child’s Passport to Health - “

How do we make a difference in this world? One successful effort is Child’s Passport to Health’s work in Guatemala!

We are going in November 2023 to provide audiology and ENT surgery services for children in Morales, Guatemala, where we have developed a strong relationship with local health care providers. Last May 2022, we saw over 450 children and provided care; surgical and audiology, for over one hundred children of both urban and Indigenous Mountain regions and expect to do so again this year.

Your support, whatever size, is so important! Your contribution helps support not only this trip but future trips! Funds are used to support volunteer trips to purchase medications, equipment such as hearing aids, and surgical and medical supplies.

Consider joining our volunteer efforts! We would love your involvement and lots of opportunities are calling; provide your vision and guidance on our Board of Directors, join our medical committee to assure high quality care guidelines, participate in the next medical trip, or help plan new international health opportunities! More than 4,000 Guatemalan newborns were screened for hearing impairment last year, thanks to a new program under the direction of audiologist Mike Mallahan and supported in part by CP2H and the Mill Creek Rotary.

In Phase I of the program, nurses and audio technicians trained by Mallahan’s audiology team screened infants in Quetzaltenango, Quiche, Morales, Panjachel, Coban and three hospitals in Guatemala City. Once identified, children with hearing deficits receive follow up which can include hearing aids and referral to various deaf education organizations around the country.

Guatemala has a higher rate of childhood deafness compared to other countries; for example in the US, one out of every 1000 children are born deaf, as compared to six out of 1000 in Guatemala.

Plans are moving forward to expand the services to Phase 2 through another Rotary Global grant of $100K, which will likely be funded by early 2021.

What if you could give a deaf child the gift of hearing? You can! This year we traveled to 4 locations in Guatemala to provide mobile Hearing clinics for children. Because of your generosity, we were able to complete hearing tests on nearly 200 children, fit hearing aids, and clean and treat many ears to improve hearing.
