2018-2023 – A lot has changed in 6 years. When people give me kind compliments today, they often ask what I’m DOING differently. And those habits are significant. But it’s how I’m THINKING differently that’s made all the difference.

Along the way I learned I wasn’t just changing my health habits, I had to also expand and refine my IDENTITY to include “SOMEONE WHO PUTS HER WELLNESS FIRST”. Prior to this journey, I put myself last out of an effort to feel valuable, of service, like I was a contributor. And prioritizing myself felt selfish and “extra”. I wore self-sacrifice like a badge of honor.

I built my identity around being reliable, responsible, responsive and professional. Someone who would do anything it took. And I took every opportunity to reinforce that narrative. But I paid the price for that with bare-minimum self-care and the frequent need to stress-soothe.

Beyond running, yoga and kettlebells, beyond eating clean and skin-care regimens, the changes actually started here:

1) Acknowledge the identity and narrative you are reinforcing. Truly make space for that to change and include your total wellbeing and all that requires.
2) Create and uphold boundaries around time, focus and energy. Use discernment and learn how to communicate your boundaries.
3) Time-management, which is really energy management. Find a tool. Stick to it 100%. I created The Daily Compass to support time blocking and my focus/attention/energy boundaries.
4) Invest in the lengthy process of identifying what types of exercise give you joy and support your goals and values. And invest in the lengthy process of identifying a way of eating that gives you joy and supports your goals and values. Expect lots of trial and error. It’s not linear.
5) Adjust/uplevel your physical environment to support your best life and healthiest lifestyle.
6) Surround yourself with people who enthusiastically support your goals and share a passion for feeling wholly good.

These are easier said than done. Get a coach and identify accountability buddies. Get unstuck. Disrupt the unsatisfying inertia. You CAN change.

This morning I reflected on the things I wish I knew this clearly a decade ago, 2, 3 decades ago
and I’m sharing them here.
What gem of awareness did you gain with each trip around the sun?

I took a break recently. It took 6 months of planning and preparing for it, which feels absurd, but I did it. And just as I re-emerge from said GLORIOUS break, I read a post by writer about the 7 types of rest and how important it is to take all 7 types to avoid burnout. Wish I’d seen his post, oh, say, 30 years ago 😏
According to Dr. Saundra Dalton-Smith (and her book, Sacred Rest) there are 7 types of rest:
- Physical
- Mental
- Social
- Spiritual
- Sensory
- Emotional
- Creative
Here’s my spin on each of the 7 to reflect what I’ve learned in my 50 years on Earth in hopes it may resonate for you and inspire you to take action:
- Physical: Get at least 7 hours of sleep each night, be active enough that your body needs recovery time and take it, do physical self-care that supports recovery
- Mental: Use tools (apps, the Daily Compass, post-its, etc) to keep track of mundane things – dump them into these tools rather than overload your mind, meditate to practice disengaging from the “stuff” of life so you’re able to do so when you need to
- Social: Schedule alone time where you are your only responsibility
- Spiritual: Regularly do the things that nourish your spirit, like being in Nature or enjoying art, free yourself from any structure on your spirituality and just receive what moves you
- Sensory: Take a meaningful technology break (phones, computers, TV, watches), reduce your sensory input and simplify
- Emotional: Be with those who feel emotionally easy to be with, or, like #3, carve out some alone time to simplify and give your emotions some rest
- Creative: Take a vacation from the hustle and producing, the world won’t drastically change and you won’t be behind if you take a little break from creating.
Which one challenges you most? What change will you be making to support rest?

Discipline. It’s the fertilizer for all behavior change but seems to peter out quickly or feels like a superpower only “special” people have.
Today’s What’s Good This Week email illuminates what must be at the root of discipline for it to last and for it to get much easier to sustain long term.
And all the usual goodies too 🥰
