Our top priority is ensuring the safety of our communities, customers, and crews as we prepare for tomorrow’s forecasted extreme weather, including conducting a targeted Public Safety Power Shutoff (PSPS) starting at 10 am, December 17, potentially impacting about 50,000 customers in Boulder, Clear Creek, Jefferson, Larimer and Weld counties. Weather conditions necessitating a PSPS are expected to start improving around 6 p.m. Wednesday, though high winds that may create wildfire risk and cause outages are expected to continue through Friday.

To find out whether your address is affected by the public safety power shutoff, visit https://co.my.xcelenergy.com/s/outage-safety/outage-map

We also stress that those who are not expected to be part of the PSPS may still experience outages due to the high winds associated with this dangerous weather event.

For more information on how to prepare, visit https://co.my.xcelenergy.com/s/outage-safety/wildfires

As always, our crews will work as quickly as they can to restore power in the event of a PSPS or other weather-related outages.

The Colorado Department of Transportation is urging motorists to prepare for dangerous travel conditions as high winds are forecast to impact the Front Range, where peak gusts may reach 75 to 85 mph on Dec. 17.

High winds may also lead to power outages, which could result in traffic signal failures at intersections. If traffic lights are dark or flashing, motorists must treat the intersection like a four-way stop. Slow down, come to a complete stop, and proceed only when it is safe and your turn.

Tips for all motorists:
-Reduce speed and keep both hands firmly on the wheel
-Be alert for sudden gusts, especially when passing larger vehicles
-Give high-profile vehicles plenty of room on the roadway
-Do not overcorrect if you get blown off course by a short gust
-Watch for debris in travel lanes and changing road conditions
-Avoid unnecessary travel during peak wind periods, if possible, especially for semi-trucks, light-weighing and smaller vehicles
-Once you are at your destination, park away from trees and power lines

If you are traveling on bike or wheels on pathways, use caution. Some underpasses could be flooded due to sump pumps being un-powered, or debris could be in the path due to high winds.

A Red Flag Warning is issued for Wednesday, Dec. 17, in Boulder County. Open burning is not allowed anywhere in Boulder County all day and similar conditions are expected to last for the next few days.

Red Flag Warnings mean warm temperatures, very low humidities, and stronger winds are expected to combine to produce an increased risk of fire danger.

Avoid any outdoor activities that may cause a spark or flame (no campfires, charcoal grills, slash burns, outdoor welding, parking in high grass, etc.). Do not throw ci******es or matches outdoors. They may ignite dry grass on the side of the road and become a wildfire.

It’s critical that everyone does their part to prevent wildfires. Simple actions can make a big difference in protecting Boulder County from devastating fire damage.

Due to Xcel Energy’s Public Safety Power Shutoff Boulder’s Office of Disaster Management’s Emergency Operation Center is activated and will provide updates to keep the community informed.
