Heartburn from time to time is common – but frequent, persistent reflux could be gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). Affecting an estimated one in five Americans, GERD can interfere with daily life and, if left untreated, may lead to more health complications.

In a recent B*H lecture, Lisa Balduf, MD, FACS, board-certified general surgeon with Boulder Valley Surgical Associates, shared expert guidance on recognizing symptoms, when to seek care and the full range of treatment options – from lifestyle changes and medications to minimally invasive procedures.

The reassuring news? Most patients improve without surgery.

Today is Heart Valve Disease Awareness Day.

Heart valve disease occurs when one of the heart’s four valves becomes damaged, limiting blood flow and forcing the heart to work harder. Symptoms like shortness of breath, fatigue or dizziness are often mistaken for normal aging – but they can be important warning signs.

At Boulder Heart, our Structural Heart & Valve team offers comprehensive testing and advanced, minimally invasive treatment options, including TAVR, WATCHMAN and MitraClip® therapy for those who have heart valve disease.

❤️ February is Heart Month and it’s the perfect time to better understand your risk for heart disease.

For seven years, grateful patients Leonard and Nancie Velick have generously donated funds for discounted HeartScans in honor of Jamie Doucet, MD, interventional cardiologist at Boulder Heart. This noninvasive coronary calcium scan can detect plaque in the arteries before symptoms develop, helping patients take action early.

HeartScans may be especially beneficial in detecting coronary artery disease (CAD) for adults 50+ with risk factors such as family history, high blood pressure, elevated cholesterol, smoking history or excess weight, even if you don’t have symptoms.

Discounted $150 scans are available for a limited time while supplies last. Read more about who should consider a HeartScan and how to schedule at the link: https://bit.ly/4ajYG5A

Even in a low-snow winter, this is important to know. ❄️❤️

In the colder months, cardiologists often see an increase in heart attacks linked to snow shoveling – especially in people who aren’t regularly active. Sudden, intense exertion in cold temperatures can put significant strain on the heart.

Chirag Chauhan, MD, structural interventional cardiologist at Boulder Heart, shares why this happens and what to watch for.

As we recognize Heart Month, consider this a reminder to pace yourself, warm up and listen to your body – just in case the snow decides to make an appearance.

Vascular surgery is a lesser-known surgical subspecialty, but it’s a critical field of medicine. Whether in the operating room or through medical management, vascular surgeons work with their patients to ultimately prevent stroke, blood vessel rupture or limb loss and improve quality of life.

B*H is proud to welcome Melanie Hoehn, MD and Pantelis Hadjizacharia, MD, RPVI, FSVS, FACS (aka “Dr. Pan”) to our vascular surgery team. Together, they bring extensive experience in both minimally invasive endovascular procedures and traditional open surgery, offering personalized, modern treatment options for patients across the Boulder Valley.

From aneurysms and carotid artery disease to limb-salvage techniques and venous care, their expertise strengthens the future of vascular care at B*H.
