Measles is a highly contagious airborne virus – 1 person can infect 12 – 18 people. The virus spreads through airborne droplets when an infected person coughs, sneezes, or simply breathes. The virus can stay in the air in enclosed spaces for up to 2 hours after the infected person leaves the area.
Knowing the symptoms and what steps to take can help protect you and our community. Common symptoms may include fever, rash, cough, runny nose and red or watery eyes.
If you think you may have measles:
– Stay home and isolate
– Call your clinic or the ED before visiting in person
– If you are stable, a phone or video visit may be performed as a first step in your evaluation
– Always wear a mask when presenting to medical care
Taking these steps helps reduce the risk of spreading infection to others. More information on measles can be found here: https://bit.ly/4bCqIbS
