As we come to the end of Black History Month, we want to remind you of some pioneers that have had a profound effect on the field of medicine-
James McCune Smith (1813-1865):
The first African American to receive a medical degree in the United States. He established the first black-owned pharmacy in New York City.
Charles Drew (1904-1950):
A pioneer in blood transfusion research. He developed techniques for storing and preserving blood plasma, which saved countless lives during World War II.
Mary Eliza Mahoney (1845-1926):
The first African American woman to graduate from a nursing school in the United States. She became a professionally trained nurse.
Solomon Carter Fuller (1872-1953):
The first African American psychiatrist in the United States. He made significant contributions to the study of Alzheimer's disease.
Marilyn Gaston (born 1939):
A leading researcher on sickle cell disease. She was the first African American woman to chair the Department of Blood Research at the National Institutes of Health.
Jane Cooke Wright (1919-2013):
A researcher in chemotherapy drugs. She made significant contributions to the treatment of leukemia and lymphoma.
Leonidas Berry (1902-1995):
A renowned gastroenterologist who faced discrimination in his career. He was one of the first African American physicians to be appointed to a staff position at a major hospital in Chicago.
Daniel Hale Williams (1858-1931):
Performed the first successful open-heart surgery in 1893. He also founded Provident Hospital and Training School for Nurses, the first black-owned hospital in Chicago.
