Season 4 of Inhabit drops today!

This time, we're exploring how public art shapes our built environment and collective imagination. Through the lens of Boston’s public spaces, we uncover where people, art, and design meet—in gardens, neighborhoods, and even transit systems.

Dr. Erika Eitland and our new co-host Kimberly Seigel uncover the human side of public spaces, showing how they connect, inspire, and surprise us. Listen wherever you get your podcasts: https://inhabit.perkinswill.com/

Bowie State University recently celebrated the opening of the Martin Luther King, Jr. Center—a vibrant hub for learning, creativity, growth, and reflection—designed to inspire students to harness the power of their voice and self-expression to shape the future. Home to the university’s communication arts and humanities programs, the Center features specialized, state-of-the-art learning environments and courses for a cutting-edge 21st-century educational experience, touching every BSU student at some point in their curriculum.

Among those at the ribbon-cutting and dedication ceremony were campus leaders, alumni, local officials, and the parents of Lt. Richard Collins III, a BSU Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) candidate whose life was tragically cut short in an act of violence. A tribute to Lt. Collins is located in a communal student area on the second floor, where his image is etched into felt panels, serving as a lasting symbol of unity, resilience, and remembrance.

Inspired by the Swedish concept of “Lagom,” meaning “just the right amount,” this project embraces a lifestyle rooted in social consciousness, moderation, and sustainability. Guided by this philosophy, every design decision aimed for balance and simplicity.

The Swedish real estate company set out to transform a 1950s neoclassical site in Washington, D.C., into a modern, upscale workplace that embodies Swedish design sensibility—a human-centric, community-focused approach that promotes better living. Key features include a health studio, active design principles, and social spaces on tenant floors. The open office layout supports both collaboration and heads-down work, complemented by amenities like meeting spaces, a fitness center, a market, and an outdoor roof garden. Biophilic design elements, such as natural materials, biomorphic forms, and a two-story living wall, enhance the space near the main lobby and lower level.

The West Bund Dome Art Center is a versatile venue for performing arts and sports, housed in a repurposed concrete production factory that formed part of a 100-year-old industrial plant. The renovated facility is a key element of the West Bund Cultural Corridor masterplan, which includes several cultural buildings along the Huangpu River. Its transformation honors its industrial past while embracing a new future by preserving the dome’s original form and structure, adding a fresh internal framework to support the flexible program, and wrapping the volume in a new translucent roof that glows like a lantern at night. “From the very start, our focus was on restoring the dome structure and, in a way, trying to do as little to it as possible,” says , principal design director of our Shanghai studio, part of .

A fresh take on hospital design, this sustainable new health campus prioritizes both care and comfort, making it feel more like a wellness retreat than a medical facility. Atrium Health Union West Hospital in Stallings, North Carolina, is a hospital reimagined—a place where healing and hospitality coexist.

𝐊𝐞𝐲 𝐡𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐥𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭𝐬 𝐢𝐧𝐜𝐥𝐮𝐝𝐞:

• A design that reflects the site’s layered history as a former farming town through a stratified framework

• Three patient wings extending from a central three-story atrium, featuring earth-toned materials inspired by the agrarian context to create a more intimate, community-centered feel

• Carefully curated local artwork that enhances the healing journey along a dedicated wellness path

• An event lawn designed to serve as a communal gathering space

• Salvaged trees cleared from the site and turned into custom furniture

Marine Gateway in Vancouver has reinvented the concept of transit-oriented development (TOD) to one that’s transit-integrated. While typical TODs are located around or near a central transit hub, Marine Gateway—North America’s first project of this scale—sets a new standard for building livable, mixed-use spaces by embedding the transit hub into the design of the community.

The project’s success hinged on leveraging a planned stop on ’s new Canada Line LRT system. For over a decade, we worked closely with , the , , and local residents to unlock the site’s transformational potential. Today, Marine Gateway exemplifies a carefully considered mix of uses, a high-quality public realm, and deep integration of multi-modal transportation options, making it not only the heart of a new community but also a global showcase of integrated urban planning and a model for future developments. The Malone Family Tower is a gateway to healing, rooted in place. Welcoming its first patients in June, the new tower is an 8-story addition to ’s historic campus. This building represents the culmination of a decade-long development initiative with our client to enhance patient access to hospital-based care, create more private rooms, and facilitate better patient outcomes.

Our design seeks to strengthen community, improve environmental and human health, and provide innovative, flexible clinical spaces to meet patient needs for the next generation. Discover the Malone Family Tower at the link in our bio.
