Reasons I will judge the way you are feeding your baby:

You literally stuff a cheeseburger in your newborn's mouth.
You mix formula with vodka and feed it to your baby.
You put m**h on your ni***es before breastfeeding your baby.
You decide that supplementing is a thing you want to do, and you use Coke instead of expressed milk or formula.

Reasons I will not judge the way you feed your baby:

You breastfed for "too long."
You breastfed for not long enough.
You breastfeed with a cover.
You breastfeed without a cover.
You pump and bottle feed.
You supplement with formula.
You exclusively feed formula.

I really hate that the loudest voices in the "infant feeding wars" (and don't even get me started on that moniker!) are the rudest. It's really easy to sit behind a computer and judge people. Most of the people in the actual business of helping parents, though, realize that there's a lot of factors that make breastfeeding difficult for large swaths of people. We don't want to demonize women that use formula; we want to fight to remove those factors so that women can reach their own infant feeding goals.

Of course, supporting women is a boring story, so instead these mean spirited tomes spread like wildfire over the internet, making it seem like literally everyone is judging any more you make.

Sometimes I have families that have a hard time being honest with me (or sometimes themselves) about their goals. It can be hard, when it seems like everyone has an opinion on your parenting, to say, "I want to formula feed," or "I want to breastfeed until my kid is two," or "I want to combo feed" or any number of other things that people might criticize. But I, and most other people providing infant feeding support, care about YOU. We want to know what challenges you might face, so we can help you. We want to give you realistic and factual information to make feeding your baby an experience that you can feel successful and supported in. We want to be there for you if someone criticizes you, so we can commiserate or take actions to help.

Sometimes people get so lost in the excitement of an infant that they forget that caring for said infant are mothers, partners, families, and that these people are important, too. You are important, and so are your needs and wants. Never ever forget that.

Happy New Year!

I've been neglecting this page, but that is going to change. Over the next week or so, expect some changes here. Expect some rebranding, and expect infant feeding and nutrition information of all kinds. I am excited to work on bringing information and support to all mothers.

My friend Jessica at The Leaky B@ posted a wonderful post about how she feels that she romanticized infant feeding by not showing images of her children being bottle fed. She had previously, many times, stated that she used formula and bottles, and has always been inclusive to many types of infant feeding. It is sad that this article has become a reason to vilify her to so many.

A huge misconception that I see is that IBCLCs only care about breastfeeding/can't (or won't!) help with bottle feeding. Bottle feeding is often really confusing, and an IBCLC should be able to help you with it!

Today is pregnancy and infant loss remembrance day. Too often, women don't talk about these real, devastating losses, or they are marginalized. Today, we honor those departed babies and offer love and support to the families they have left to mourn them.
