Have you ever worried about your weight/size? Do you find yourself unable to control your eating (either too much or too little)? How about spending a large amount of your attention controlling what/when/how you eat? These feelings are normal on occasion, but feeling these things consistently may indicate something more is going on.
This week is Eating Disorder Awareness Week. 9% of Americans experience an eating disorder in their lifetime, so it's more common than you might think. It's no big wonder either since eating is one of the most common activities we do in life, averaging 4 total years in the average lifespan.
Often eating disorders are treated as taboo behavior, but they shouldn't be. Unhealthy eating habits can be worked through alone but are often easier, faster, and more effective when coached by a professional (much like getting physical therapy).
If you or a loved one is experiencing an eating disorder, know that it's nothing to be ashamed of. Like any physical or mental issue, it's best approached head-on with support from loved ones and professionals. And we at AIM are here to help.
