Children are regarded as precious in almost every culture. Their innocence is endearing and their future is full of possibilities. However, their innocence leads to naivete and they lack survival skills, making them easy victims of abuse. Today's the Day to End Child Sexual Abuse, where we come together as a community to stop and prevent sexual exploitation of children. 1 in 9 girls and 1 in 20 boys experience sexual abuse. 93% of victims know their abuser, with 34% being a family member.
It's difficult to identify in young children unless you know what to look for. Some common signs for victims are talking/acting sexually and inappropriately for their age, regression (bed-wetting, thumb-sucking, etc), social isolation, and difficulty sleeping. Common signs for abusers are isolating the child for time alone, unexpected gifts, and ignoring physical/emotional boundaries.
Here's how you can help: Firstly, believe the child. Do not say things like "Are you sure? Uncle Bobby is such a nice guy," or you will make a difficult confession harder. Secondly, trust your gut and document evidence. If someone seems off, trust your feeling. If you see or hear something sketchy, document it to help build a case. Lastly, get professional help. Talk to the police or a healthcare professional to get help for justice and healing. We at AIM are here to help so reach out today if you or someone you know needs resources.
