Probiotics part 2: What are the best probiotics for me?
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Effective dose: Probiotic supplements should contain at least 10^6 (1 million) colony-forming units (CFUs) per gram. Also for products that are made from high quality ingredients and free of artificial additives and fillers.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I give my baby girl a probiotic and vitamin D supplement to keep her young gut in check but for myself I will either take a supplement or find foods/drinks that contain probiotics naturally!
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Some good and readily available brands include:

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
If you want to keep it as natural resources as possible, some of my favorite sources of probiotics:
Kimchi
Kombucha
Yogurt
Kefir
Buttermilk
Sourdough
Pickles
Miso
Tempeh
Sauerkraut
Certain raw cheeses
Anything fermented!

Happy friends! Let’s talk about non toxic nail polishes!

This is something I got into while pregnant, just shifting towards as many "clean" products as possible (though let’s take that word with a grain of salt). These more natural ingredient based polishes can help prevent irritations like contact dermatitis and are overall less harsh on nails.

Though this industry is not highly regulated, there are a few things to look for in nail polish. A lot of nail polishes now will say "3-free" which means they do not have harsh chemical products in traditional nail polishes: formaldehyde (prevents polish chipping but a potential carcinogen); toluene (a polish solvent that may also be a neurotoxin) and dibutyl phthalate (makes polish flexible and chip-free).

Some are now even "5-free" "7-free" or more! Some are also completely plant based! Some of the other harsh ingendients being removed include: camphor, DBP, xylene, parabens, fragrances, phthalates or animal ingredients.

A few of the best "non-toxic" brands:

good.kind.pure

Cote
Base Coat
Sundays
Huell

What’s your favorite non toxic nail polish or “clean” brand in general?

As we start to settle in from the New Years reflections and look forward, be sure to stay kind to yourself. 2021 was an incredibly difficult year for everyone in every which way both personally and professionally, I can at least say for myself.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
What I hope for 2022 is finding a balance between all the things in my life as I navigate new mom and new working mom life.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
What I don’t hope for is adding more stress in my life. Hopefully I can change the things that cause it. I want to achieve my goals but still look for more ways to take stressful actions or activities that don’t bring me joy out of my life.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Don’t run around for plans you didn’t even wanna make, dont restrict your eating if it it makes you more stressed out and unhappy, don’t add another project you don’t want to do, take another zoom meeting you don’t want to be on or even stay at a job you aren’t happy with.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Take things away as needed, step back and enjoy every aspect of life just a little more than you did the year before, almost an New Years anti resolution…
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
What are you looking forward to doing more or doing less of in this new year?

Omicron is now the dominant COVID variant in the US now.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Though it feels like an endless battle with COVID we are fighting, there may be hope upon the decline of this crazy wave. If this variant can show us what COVID might look like for most when it’s simply endemic in the community, we might soon be on the other side of this pandemic version of COVID (and the vaccines played a large part in this!)
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
What are your thoughts? Where do you think this is going? Is this too simplistic?

Happy National Internal Medicine Day!! Love my specialty and so proud to have served among such amazing physicians through this pandemic! Internal medicine is the true core of medicine and where all specialties really spark from. It’s cerebral, complex and challenging in many ways but I don’t regret my decision, I am certainly .

Who else loves IM like me??!

October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. A month to raise awareness of all aspects of breast cancer from therapeutics to research.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
In recent years though, "pinkwashing" has began to occur more, a term coined by Breast Cancer Action. What began as a fundraising opportunity has become a way for big business to put a pink bow out there and ultimately profit from the cause.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Here are a few ways to be more effective in your support:
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
1. Buy only pink products that contribute substantially. Some companies will even go up to 100% with their contributions from profit.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
2. Rather than buying from large corporations, contribute to small businesses run by breast cancer survivors (look for small businesses run by survivor-entrepreneurs like AnaOno Intimates by Dana Donofree).
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
3. When donating, flag your donation for specific initiatives such as racial or socioeconomic disparities.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
4. Understand this is not a just a disease, there are people behind this disease. Remember to keep those battling breast cancer in mind.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
5. Bring awareness among friends and family and spread the word about the best ways to help move breast cancer treatment, research and support forward.

I got this amazing new carrier not thinking about all the benefits until I began looking it up! It’s not just an easy way to travel with your baby but can have lots of other perks as well! (This is not a promotion lol).

Some of the best perks:

1 Can help you bond with your baby and reduce PPD
2 Helps prevent flattening of the head
3 Can promote digestion (helping with colic and refluxes)
4 It can help baby learn to use muscle groups to balance themselves
5 can reduce crying and provide more time for cognitive development discovering the world around them
6 Mimics the womb, helping babies feel more comfortable as they adjust to their new environment

Happy women in medicine month! Being a new mom to a baby girl, this year feels particularly poignant to be celebrating powerful, strong women.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Being a women in medicine requires you to wear so many hats, sometimes simultaneously. I’ve never felt more empowered than I do now though, to show up and prove what women can do in this amazing field.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
No matter what stage in training or life you may be, you have defied many odds and deserve to be celebrated this month and every month! Cheers to all my female healthcare workers!

We made it to the beach for babies first road trip. Woah that was a wild ride! Some things to note about car seats:
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
1. All infants and toddlers should ride in a rear-facing seat in the back of the car until they reach the highest weight or height allowed by their car safety seat manufacture
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
2. The shoulder straps must be at or below your baby’s shoulders.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
3. Never put a blanket between your child and the harness straps, or underneath or behind her.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
4. For car travel, don't dress your infant in bulky outerwear; it can interfere with the tightness of the harness. Instead, place a warm blanket over your child and harness.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

As I see more news now of pregnant women admitted to the icu, intubated, or on ECMO, I once again want to remind everyone how vital it is to get vaccinated.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I got the covid vaccine at 11 weeks. 11 weeks. Why did I take the “risk”? Because I decided these risks did not outweigh the benefits and I rather get a side effect from the vaccine then take a chance with what could happen to me or my baby if I got covid while pregnant.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
It wasn’t an easy choice but I am so glad I made it. Baby Isabelle is doing well and so am I. She might even have some protective antibodies now!
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Even if you are young and healthy, the reasons to get the vaccine might have nothing to do with you mostly, but even more so just helping reduce the spread of this virus to those more vulnerable like I was just a week ago.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Please if you are hesitant about getting vaccinated, reach out to me with your questions or if you want specific medical advice, speak with your personal physician.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Sending you all good vibes on this cloudy Saturday.
