A Flutter of Friendship Featuring Judy & Nancy
Nancy arrived at the Gables first. When Judy joined the community, the two connected quickly over something simple, a shared meal. What started with easy conversation soon became something steady and familiar.
They discovered they think alike and share a similar sense of humor. Their days are often filled with talking, laughing, attending bingo together, and spending time outside during the summer months. These everyday moments have become the foundation of a friendship that feels natural and unforced. Nancy shared that friendships like this do not come along often, and that it is rare to find someone who truly feels like a best friend at this stage of life.
Having each other has made life at the Gables more enjoyable for both of them. Laughter, they agree, is good medicine, and their friendship has helped ease feelings of loneliness. Nancy shared that living here would feel “unbearable” without Judy by her side.
They balance one another well. Judy is the talker. Nancy is the listener. When asked to describe their friendship in one word, they both smiled and agreed, fun.
When asked what they appreciate most about one another, their answers came easily.
“Nancy has such a deep compassion for others,” Judy shared.
“And Judy makes me laugh every day,” Nancy said. “That means everything.”
On tougher days, they support one another simply by being present, listening, checking in, and looking out for each other in small but meaningful ways. Nancy is especially thoughtful, often making sure Judy is not alone, like ensuring someone is with her on the elevator. Nancy referenced the Patsy Cline song “Side by Side,” a reflection of how they move through life together.
As advice to others about making new friends later in life, Judy and Nancy offered a simple reminder: keep your heart open. Friendships can be found anywhere, at any age.
