Wow, the CS Monitor made a trip to the moon.

The historic Artemis II journey around the moon this month reminded us of the third moon landing in 1971 with the Apollo 14 mission.

The Christian Science Monitor covered this momentous event. Enjoy these photos of astronaut Alan Shepard as he took his first steps on the moon, as well as the cover story in the Monitor.

Did you know the Library has an extensive collection of historic Bibles? We’re celebrating by sharing some of these volumes on Thursdays in November.

First up is the Geneva Bible. Protestant exiles in Switzerland published this Bible in 1560, after fleeing England and the persecution of Queen Mary I. It was priced affordably and offered numbered verses, commentary notes, and a Roman typeface that made it more accessible than other Bibles.

This popular version was read in Protestant homes and used by such notable figures as William Shakespeare and Oliver Cromwell, as well as the Pilgrims—English Separatists who travelled to America in 1620.

I was shopping yesterday on Black Friday and I had the best conversation. A woman, who was helping me, and I started chatting. At one point, I shared how a young man who was wise beyond his years (whom I was talking about forgiveness with) said: “If you don’t take offense than you wouldn’t need to forgive.” (His point was why not put the emphasis on not taking offense in the first place.) To this the woman said that she was practicing compassion actively. She shared the way she’s doing that with a family member right now is not gossiping about her with the rest of the family. She also shared that when her son was young her husband was hit by a drunk driver while he was walking. Unfortunately he passed and the driver was sentenced to prison for 21 years. He got out after 11. She told her son she truly has forgiven the driver. I then shared what I have found helpful in CS…to separate the error from the individual and pray to see the child of God…like the tares and wheat in the Bible. She said she liked that. How’s that for a Black Friday conversation? I was very touched. It makes you think, if she can forgive that what can I forgive? Where two or more gather in my name there the Christ is…even in the midst of all the busyness.
