The Festival of the Wichitas was so much fun again this year! Huge thanks to everyone who came out, supported us, and shared your kind words and curiosity. Every genuine interaction brings us so much joy and reminds us why we do what we do.

Sometimes, the items we make are misunderstood. Our tablecloths and displays may be black, and our art features bones and insects, but everything we create comes from a deep love and respect for nature, life, and natural cycle of transformation. Each piece is meant to honor that cycle, and showcase beauty in the unusual and what would usually be hidden away or discarded.

There are moments when that misunderstanding can make things a bit harder for small artists like us, but your support makes all the difference. Thank you for showing up consistently, seeing us for who we truly are, for approaching with open minds and curiosity and for finding the beauty in what others might overlook.

You are the reason we keep showing up, with gratitude, open hearts, and our usual bit of weirdness! 🖤

My beetles have been hard at work, cleaning a wild boar skull.

After I carefully remove as much skin and tissue as I can, by hand, I use a colony of dermestid beetles to naturally finish cleaning the bones. They’re nature’s little recycle crew. They are able to get to all of the surfaces, inside and out, like the brain cavity, stick chambers and nasal turbinates, that I wouldn't have been able to reach myself. This ensures they are completely clean before going to the next step.

They can be a fussy little group, requiring a completely secure and sealed enclosure, to maintain their health and make sure they are never exposed to any pest, predators or diseases. I constantly maintain optimum temperature, humidity and lighting to keep them happy and in peak physical condition and keep them reproducing and keeping the colony alive. The start up cost is also not cheap, but I feel like it's a good investment for the beautiful work they do for me in return.

These beetles are often used by museums and scientists because they’re incredibly efficient at removing tissue without damaging bone or any delicate structures. It’s a respectful, non-invasive way to honor the animal and preserve the beauty of the bone. The process is clean, contained, and completely natural, just how nature intended.
