Jax had a wonderful night and slept 9 hours straight 🤍
Unfortunately, this morning he woke up with a 101.9 fever.

We ran a full infection workup and went ahead and restarted the antibiotic he was on for his UTI until we can figure out exactly where the infection is coming from. Our poor boy just can’t seem to catch a break.

We were also fitted today for his helmet to help reshape his head. Due to the torticollis in his neck from being intubated so many times, he has a flat spot on one side. His helmet should be ready in a couple of weeks. He is not going to be pleased — I can’t even get him to wear hats, and this one has to be worn 23 hours a day 😅 — but it’s what’s best for him.

If anyone has any cute helmet decorating ideas, please drop them in the comments 🤍

Our strong little warrior keeps pushing forward, even on the hard days.

Jax crashed pretty hard last night, and we still don’t fully know why. The things he’s struggling with right now aren’t what the doctors expected after the procedure he had, which is really scary. They’re concerned it could be related to his heart function.
Right now it feels like we’ve basically started over. Jax became fluid overloaded, and his kidneys are in a really bad spot. The team is working hard to get his numbers moving in the right direction, and we’re slowly starting to see some improvement there. They’re planning more extensive testing on his kidneys to make sure the kidneys themselves aren’t the main issue. At this point, the concern is that his heart may not be pumping well enough to properly perfuse them.
His lab values were extremely scary last night.
He’s now sedated and resting. He’s back on epinephrine, dex, IV diuretics, and they will likely have to increase his heart failure medication. He also has a Foley catheter to closely measure his urine output and is back on high-flow oxygen. In many ways, we’re back to where we were when he had to be transferred from the floor back down to the ICU.
We had just gotten our boy back. He had just started acting like himself again.
Our hearts are broken. We don’t know what this means for the future, but we are praying so hard that he isn’t failing this physiology. This has been unbelievably hard.
Five weeks ago we thought we were going home. I thought by now we would be moving into our new home as a whole family. Right now that dream feels further away again. It feels like one step forward and two steps back, and the heartbreak of that hits harder every time.
Please keep Jax in your prayers. https://trendflash.cafex.biz/blog/genz-our-hearts-are-broken-jax-suddenly-crashes-after-surgery-and-returns-to-icu

This isn’t the update we had been praying to share. Jax is still having a very hard time and continues to struggle with tolerating his feeds. After trying several different formulas and medications without improvement, we met with the GI team and learned that the next steps, while difficult, are necessary.

On Monday, Jax will undergo an upper GI study, followed by another procedure that will require him to be placed back on a ventilator. Those who have followed his journey know how challenging that is and how much it takes out of his tiny body each time. During the procedure, doctors will place a GJ tube again—similar to the previous attempt—but this time it will be done using a scope. They will also inject Botox into his pyloric sphincter to help relax the muscle, since tightness there may be preventing him from properly digesting his feeds.

It’s heartbreaking to see him go through yet another procedure, but we are holding onto hope that this could finally be the step that helps him tolerate feeds, gain weight, and start getting stronger. Right now, he has dropped back down to the same weight he had when we were admitted on January 6th, which is incredibly difficult to witness after everything he has endured.

Please continue to keep Jax in your prayers. Pray for the doctors’ steady hands, for no complications, and for his little body to endure this with strength. We are deeply thankful for the love, prayers, and support surrounding our family during this incredibly challenging time. 💙 https://trendflash.cafex.biz/blog/genz-holding-onto-hope-for-jax

As incredibly thankful as I am that Jax’s heart surgery went so well, it’s still so hard to see him like this again. Right now, we are asking for prayers for his blood pressure to stabilize. We knew this road wouldn’t be easy, but no matter how much you try to prepare your heart, you never truly can. Please keep our sweet boy covered in prayers. 🤍 https://trendflash.cafex.biz/blog/genz-holding-onto-hope-for-jax

Jax is back on BiPAP, and it’s been a really hard day for our little fighter. 💔 With his heart condition, even crying can be dangerous, so sometimes sedation is the only way to keep him safe.

Right now the doctors are still trying to figure out what’s causing the fluid overload again. His echo looked good this morning, and we’re holding onto that hope.

Please keep praying that whatever is going on is temporary and fixable. Our sweet boy has already been through so much. 🤍🙏

Jax is doing great. We’re still moving slowly with everything to make sure he stays stable, but he’s becoming more and more himself every day.I’ve quietly been carrying a worry. He hasn’t been babbling much, and I kept telling myself it was just the medications. Still… in the back of my mind, I worried about the potential for cognitive effects after CPR.But today? He found his voice. And I cannot even begin to explain the relief and joy that filled my heart hearing him babble again. It was the sweetest sound in the world.Thank you all for the continued prayers, love, and support. They mean more than you know. 💙 https://trendflash.cafex.biz/blog/genz-from-heart-failure-medication-to-his-first-bottle-baby-jaxs-tiny-but-powerful-victory

Jax made it very clear last night that he did not like the new mask — so we switched back to the one he prefers. He definitely knows what he likes. 💙

The good news: his oxygen settings are coming down, his chest X-ray looks better, and we’re hoping he can move back to high-flow through his nose soon.

Please keep praying for comfort as we carefully wean his sedation and pain meds, and that his little body keeps healing. 🙏💙

Jax’s infection markers have gone up, so the doctors are running a full infection workup and removing anything that could be a possible source. It’s been a hard day, but we’re hoping these changes help his little body turn the corner. 💙

Please keep praying that he stays calm, his blood gases remain stable, and that any infection begins to heal. Every prayer means so much to our family. 🙏

💙 James – A True Little Heart Warrior 💙

Born with multiple complex congenital heart defects, James has already endured open-heart surgery and fought for his life on ECMO for nearly two weeks after critical complications.

Despite countless hospital days and overwhelming odds, he continues to prove he is stronger than anyone ever imagined.

Now preparing for another open-heart surgery, James faces the road ahead with the same unbreakable spirit and radiant smile that have carried him this far. 💛

Jax is making progress, and we’re holding onto every small win. 💙

We still have weeks ahead in the hospital, and even after discharge, we won’t be going home right away. Life feels paused — but seeing him become more like himself reminds us this season will be worth it.

Thank you for every donation, prayer, and message. You’re the reason we don’t feel alone in this. 🙏
Please keep praying for our sweet boy. 🙏
