When I wrap up my RT groups, I ask each participant to share one thing they are thankful for from the last week and something they are thankful for now or in the future. Some roll their eyes, but most yell out "this group!"
Studies show how powerful the brain is when it focuses on what it's thankful for!

Its been a busy fall getting back in the swing of teaching young minds and exercising with old ones. Fall is exciting because we have had a few new clients call asking for evaluations. Happy to be educating people about recreation therapy on a regular basis and what benefits it can help with for those struggling! The
Eddy family has spent a few weekends canning in the kitchen and playing soccer.

Some of my personal favorite recreation therapy.......usually consists of being outside and being active. Life is better outside; especially with friends and family.

These smiles are some of my favorites at a weekly boxing group I lead. Veterans are a great population to work with. So many jokes and so much history sitting in one location. Its an honor to bring their "fun"ctional recreation therapy each week.

This little dude who helps me provide meaningful interaction with my boxing group has earned himself a break this summer. Jameson Eddy enjoys helping me put the mitts on the guys as well as leading in warm ups and combination hits. He is done with 2nd grade and is looking forward to starting 3rd grade in the fall. When he's not helping with recreation with me, he's enjoying his own recreation of playing bass guitar and running around doing track and soccer. I am so thankful for Mr. Jameson Eddy and his help in this small business adventure.

Every Tuesday, I get the pleasure and honor to bring joy to a group of Veteran's. These guys join me for an hour of exercise and camaraderie. For some of them, it is their highlight of the week. I bring my music and energy to lead them in a warmup, practice hits, combination moves, and then lastly, the heavy bag free for all. If you know a senior living facility in Linn county thats needing a little pep in their programming, send them my info. I would love to bring my expertise of physical activity plus meaningful recreation to your loved one.

2012 marked a pivotal moment in my professional journey - I landed my first role as an Activities Director in a skilled nursing facility and discovered my true passion. While I was studying for a PE degree in 2010, my favorite course we studied was adaptive physical education. Then, while studying to become a Activities Director, the instructor introduced me to the world of healthcare professionals, Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialists. I was captivated by the idea of empowering individuals with disabilities to pursue their passions. These photos celebrate the triumphs of my first clients, who reclaimed their joy, even though the recreation looked a little different than what they were used to. .

The best thing about recreation therapy is the ability to improve quality of life with a variety of interventions, across multiple generations! With Intergenerational interactions, both parties benefit. Younger people learn to look outside themselves and foster empathy while older people can reminisce, mentor while improving cognitive function. Each week, I get to see these two make each other better humans. Both are growing stronger mentally, emotionally and physically each week thanks to recreation therapy. .

Many people in Oregon, have never heard of a recreation therapist. Let me tell you more about the profession I fell in love with. There are zero universities in Oregon that offer the education for Recreation Therapy. I recieved my specific R.T. course from Eastern Washington University, after recieving my Bachelors Degree in Physical Education, in 2010. In order to become a C.T.R.S. you have to have a bachelors degree in a related field and specialized training in Recreation Therapy specifically. After higher education coursework is completed a national credentialing exam is taken from NCTRC. This exam is 3 hours and 120 multiple choice questions related to the professional training and internship hours we have had. I passed the exam in 2021.

In our area, most positions of Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialists (CTRS) are employed in the psychiatric setting or U.S. Veterans Affairs long term care buildings, or some hospitals in Portland. It's a service that is actually billable for Medicare/Medicaid in some states.

I am proud of what I do and hope to keep sharing with others about our unique field of study! Anyone have any questions about a recreation therapist?!
