Before birth, Vincent Gross was diagnosed with Complete Heart Block. The Gross Family met with UPMC doctors right away to determine a plan of action and continued to do so every week leading up to baby Vincent's birth. He was born on Aug 9, 2011 at Magee, at 7 lbs 13 oz. After his birth, he was transferred to Children's Hospital for observation in the CICU. While at Children's, baby Vincent's vita
ls dropped severely and he became very sick. The doctors thought he had Sepsis from a meconium aspiration during birth. Because of his heart condition, baby Vincent's body could not respond and fight off the infection. Only a couple of hours after birth, he was given an external pacer through his neck and into his heart. Vincent recovered quickly from the infection and was fitted with an internal pacemaker just one week after his birth. "Because of the doctors at UPMC, Vincent is here with us today," says mom, Jennifer. "My husband and I would like to thank all of the doctors who treated Vincent and continue to do so today. Because of their preparation and communication, our son Vincent is now a strong, healthy and funny 18-month old baby boy!"
