Today marks the 160th anniversary of Juneteenth, a day when Black communities honor our past, present, and future.

On June 19, 1865, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was issued, the delayed news of freedom finally reached those trapped in bo***ge in Galveston, Texas. Upon receiving news of their freedom, those individuals previously enslaved began celebrating, coming together in prayer, singing, and dancing.

Originally called Jubilee Day, today is now known as Juneteenth, or Freedom Day.

This year, Juneteenth arrives at a time when we are seeing a nationwide, coordinated backlash against an inclusive America. We will persevere.

Yoga teaches us that so many things in life are about the journey not the outcome. Since August 2023, I have observed this amazing young man navigate a cancer diagnosis with such grace and perseverance.

He had a small list of experiences he was really looking forward to and the dolphin encounter didn’t disappoint. Thanks to all the wonderful organizations that made this happen.

I am in awe of his intelligence, humor and drawing abilities. I am truly grateful to have had this experience and to share in his joy.
