Earlier this week we talked about protecting the first 15 minutes after waking.

But there’s another small window that can make your day feel steadier:

The 15 minutes before you begin work.

For professionals in demanding roles - educators, healthcare workers, public safety and others - the day can accelerate as soon as you walk in the classroom or start your shift.

Before the pace picks up, create a small pause for a few minutes to protect your focus and priorities for the day.

Try this:
1. Review your schedule for the day to ensure you're prepared for any meetings or decisions.
2. Identify the 1-3 things that are "must do" for the day and prioritize.
3. Take a few deep breaths, sit quietly, or step outside for a moment before you begin.

This is about protecting your focus and mental bandwidth before the day, or your co-workers, students, patients, clients, etc. begin pulling at your attention.

Your work requires energy, presence, and good decisions. With a few intentional minutes you can create a steadier start.

What’s one small habit that helps you prepare for the workday ahead?

Minutes matter in the morning

If you work in a high-responsibility profession, the first 15 minutes after you wake up sets the tone for your entire day. Why? Because your nervous system is shifting from sleep mode to performance mode.

Instead of reaching for your phone or rushing straight into the day, try protecting those first few minutes.

A simple structure:

1. Drink a full glass of water (before caffeine) to rehydrate and wake the body and mind.
2. Open the blinds or step into natural light. Light helps regulate cortisol and wakefulness.
3. Take a few slow breaths and think about the day ahead and your priorities.

That’s it. No elaborate routine. Just a few intentional minutes to stabilize your energy and focus.

When your work requires clear thinking, decisiveness, and emotional bandwidth, the way you start your morning matters more than you think.

Which of the habits above could you add to your first 15 minutes tomorrow?

Heart health isn’t about comparison — it’s about awareness.

This simple 3-minute test offers insight into how well your heart recovers after activity, which matters in high-stress jobs.

Ever wonder how your cardio fitness stacks up, even if it’s just against your own baseline?

Here’s how to do the test:

Grab a 12-inch (30.5 cm) step, bench, or sturdy box

Set a metronome app to [specific strategy – ex. "96 beats per minute"]

Step to the beat for 3 minutes

→ Up with your right foot, then up with your left

→ Down with your right, then down with your left

Switch lead legs at the halfway point (90 seconds)

When time’s up, sit down immediately and:

✅ If you’re counting manually, start counting your heart rate at a pulse point for exactly 1 minute

✅If you’re using a heart rate monitor, record your heart rate at exactly one minute after sitting down.

Then check the chart in this post to see where you land.

The lower your heart rate after exercise, the stronger your recovery response, and that’s a great sign of cardiovascular fitness.

Track your baseline. Progress matters more than perfection.

🧠 Feeling Overstimulated at Work? You’re Not Alone.

Constant notifications, back-to-back meetings, and information overload can leave employees feeling mentally drained—even when the workday isn’t over.

Common signs of overstimulation include:

Difficulty focusing or making decisions

Irritability or mental fatigue

Feeling overwhelmed by noise, screens, or multitasking

Helpful strategies at work:

Schedule short screen or notification breaks

Create focus blocks for deep work

Step away for brief movement or quiet time

Normalizing overstimulation helps create healthier, more productive workplaces.

✨ Small resets can make a big difference.

Flourishing...

To flourish is to not only grow but to thrive in a situation because there are optimal conditions.

The Flourish Group is a consulting firm with a passion for food, fitness, health and wellness. We help brands in those categories as well as other businesses and non-profits increase visibility and advance their growth strategies through PR, marketing and social media services. And because we have a passion for and expertise in these areas, we also work with executives, entrepreneurs and other professionals to improve their health and wellness through personal health coaching and workplace wellness offerings. The company was founded by Niki Campbell, a veteran PR pro who has always had a passion for health and wellness. Five years ago, she took that passion and turned it into a side business as a certified personal trainer and health coach. In 2018 she left her full-time job to create a company that would combine her decades of communications and PR experience with her newfound passion for health and wellness. What resulted was The Flourish Group. Her vision for the company is to provide the best in public relations, marketing and communications to brands that seek to make the world and their communities a better place through their products, services and initiatives. And, because she has a love for helping professionals like herself and their companies become healthier, The Flourish Group offers wellness programs for individuals and workplaces.
