Briley Hensley, 17, has been dancing nearly her whole life.

She knows falls happen, especially to dancers. What she didn't expect was a fall in November 2023 that led to two surgeries on her ankle and stopped her from dancing for nearly two years.

Briley had her first, tight-rope surgery in March 2024; the device failed and broke apart in her foot, leaving her to need a second surgery that October. She has been in physical therapy since.

"I was nervous when I first visited," Briley shared, "I was unsure if I would be able to dance again, let alone at the level I was when I got injured."

When she started physical therapy, Briley couldn't walk, run or even stand for long periods of time without pain. She turned to Ellen Vogt at our Lexington - Bryan Station center because Ellen regularly works with dancers to get them back on pointe.

With Ellen's help, Briley worked hard in physical therapy. She focused on her range of motion and strength and eventually was able to put on her pointe shoes for the first time in two years. While she's not fully back to 100%, she is continuing to work towards that goal.

"I feel much better and much more confident," Briley said. "I'm very excited to continue dancing and continue working to get back to where I used to be."

Reagan Frazee, a level 10 gymnast, had her world turn upside down when she went from spending 20 hours a week practicing to zero.

Reagan tore her ACL and meniscus while dismounting from the beam one day at practice. Sidelined, she turned to Physical Therapist Mike Genco and Physical Therapist Assistant Aly Cline to return to the sport she loves.

Regan Balmoja has always been an athlete and outdoor enthusiast.

"In high school, I was a successful pole vaulter and a very unsuccessful cross-country runner," she said. "During the one season I tried cross-country, I couldn't finish a single race without walking."

Always up for a challenge, Regan decided to give distance running another try. In fact, she decided to train for a marathon.

Unfortunately for Regan, she struggled with shin pain in the early months of training. Sports Medicine Coordinator Liz Serewicz was instrumental in kicking off Regan's care plan, which included basic exercises that eased her initial symptoms. When the pain returned, Regan started working with Physical Therapist Zachary Meineke.

"Once I got into the center and started working with Zach, I knew I was in the right place," Regan said.

A key moment for Regan was reviewing video footage with Zachary, when they discovered dysfunction in her running gait. Zachary recommended targeted exercises and stretching to restore healthy biomechanics and build strength. Just a few months made a huge difference.

"I went from counting myself out of the marathon to crossing the finish line with a smile on my face and then many happy tears," Regan said. “Now, I feel like I know what muscles I need to continue to focus on strengthening. Not only so I can begin training for another marathon next year, but so that I can enjoy running and other fitness activities year round!”

When gardener Beverly Selby fell and broke her right wrist, she was suddenly unable to participate in the fall harvest, along with her other typical activities.

"In the beginning, I was in an unbearable amount of pain with a severe mobility impediment," Beverly shared. "I felt that I would never be able to use my hand or move my wrist effectively again. I was at the lowest emotional and physical point of my life."

Eager to get back to her normal, Beverly dove into physical therapy. She worked with Physical Therapist Paige Bradley at our Wi******er - Shoppers Drive center. Paige helped her meet goals and supported her through the necessary work, even when it wasn't easy.

"There were moments that I felt I was being too emotional," Beverly said. "But having my feelings validated, and being supported and encouraged the whole way, was what motivated me to keep coming back."

With Paige's help, Beverly reached milestones in her healing journey such as lifting her thumb off a table with her palm flat, rotating her wrist and making a fist.

Beverly is happy to report, while she is not fully pain free, she has happily returned to many of her regular activities!
