What is ototoxicity, and how can it affect your hearing?

Some medications and chemicals are considered ototoxic, meaning they can damage your inner ear and lead to hearing loss, balance issues, or tinnitus.

Known ototoxic medications and chemicals include:
• Some antibiotics (e.g., gentamicin, streptomycin)
• Chemotherapy drugs
• High doses of aspirin or NSAIDs
• Certain diuretics and heart medications
• Industrial solvents or heavy metals

Meet Alice! She recently left our office with a big smile, saying, “Wait, I just heard that!” 💙 Here she is outside of our Johnstown clinic with practitioner Mary Beth Buchan.

Thanks to the Beltone Foundation, Alice received the gift of better hearing through new hearing aids. The Foundation makes it possible for patients who need hearing assistance, but cannot afford it, to reconnect with the sounds of life.

We’re so thankful to be part of Alice’s journey — and to witness moments like this every day.

Meet Deb 😊

Deb grew up in Hershey and has lived in Elizabethtown with her husband for 37 years. They have one son, age 33. She earned a BA in Psychology from Messiah University and an MEd in Counseling from Millersville University.

Deb began her career in hearing care in 1984, inspired by her father, who had owned Beltone of Lancaster since the 1960s. As someone who has worn hearing aids since childhood, Deb understands firsthand the challenges of hearing loss — feelings of isolation, self-consciousness, and the frustration of misunderstandings. This personal perspective greatly shapes the way Deb cares for her patients.

Her greatest passion is walking alongside patients and their families, helping them understand what hearing aids can and cannot do, and guiding them through the adjustment process. For Deb, it has never been about selling devices, but about restoring connection, confidence, and quality of life.

Outside of work, Deb enjoys walking, reading, spending time with friends and her church community, and quiet evenings with her husband.
