A diaper a day to give away

A diaper a day to give away We sew and donate all-in-one, one-sized cloth diapers to local families in need.

We always need t-shirts, money for supplies, and help in cutting, applying snaps, and sewing! A diaper a day to give away is a project committed to providing struggling families with easy-to-use cloth diapers. Cloth diapers can save struggling families as much as $80 a month, can help prevent diaper rash, and radically reduce the amount of trash produced by the family. Donations of diapers or materials can be sent to

It's been a long time, folks! My baby boy is now 6 months old, and I've been test driving different cloth diapers to see what I can recommend. Believe it or not, Dappi diapers are on my OK list! Quick run down of what I tried from www.babybestbuy.com

Dappi pinless diaper - a velcro cloth diaper that needs a cover. Avoid if possible - the Velcro doesn't hold very well. $2.99 each

Dappi regular prefold diapers - birdseye cotton diapers. They work pretty well - if you use two at once they're as thick as the high end GMD prefolds. Totally worth it. $8.99 a dozen

Dappi Velcro waterproof cover. Cotton on the outside, Vinyl in the middle, mesh on the inside. They're OK - they hold everything in and they're nice and soft. The main problem is the Velcro has sharp edges, and if you're trying to make a small cover fit a chubby baby it can scratch. Order a size up to avoid this problem - this solution worked for my baby. $2.99 each.

Dappi Nylon pull-on pants - Bulletproof. They're thin but don't rip or leak, and they breathe. I've used these overnight with great
results. $3.99 for a 2 pack.

Diaper Duck - a plastic gadget that dangles a poopy diaper in the toilet, keeping your hands clean and dry. Works really well, especially if your toilet has a high water level in the bowl. Great if you can't afford/aren't allowed to get a diaper sprayer. $7.99 each

OK, I'm going to confess - I really wanted to know what the Kawaii prefold and cover diaper package was like so I could say for sure whether or not it was a good deal, so I ordered them.

They're not bad. The 24 prefolds are not as thick and soft as the Econobum set, but very reasonable, durable-looking prefolds. I've only washed them 3 times so far, and they're getting pretty fluffy and soft. Th
e 6 covers were one size minky snap covers, and I washed them once and hung them to dry. They look pretty user friendly as diaper covers go, and the stitching and snaps look good.

All in all, for $62.65 after shipping and tax, a VERY reasonable purchase. If someone is struggling with the cost of diapers, this is a great package deal. Best for someone who's so fed up they've talked about going to Walmart and buying cloth diapers, pins and plastic pants - these are the sink-or-swim cloth diaper-ers. (Friends don't let friends diaper with Ge**er! Let them know the alternatives!) If they're feeling iffy about cloth, pocket diapers will be an easier transition.

Another option for people who want cloth diapers, want to save money, and are serious about buying American - envibum makes a truly wipe-and-reuse one size diaper cover for $12.99. For every cover you buy, they donate another to a mom in a 3rd world country, and with these covers you only need two for your stash. Honest! There are no exposed seams, elastic, or anything to catch the yuckies, so you can run tap water over it, wipe it off with a dry cloth, and it's ready to go again! (I wish I knew how they did it - I'd start sewing some now!)

Hello folks! Just wanted to remind everyone that while the fancy diapers are great, cloth diapers don't have to cost a lot! Sunbaby pocket diapers only cost $108 for 24 - that's $4.50 each! And Kawaii is offering a a combo pack - 24 prefold diapers and 6 one size covers for $50 plus shipping. And that's not even getting into sewing your own!

Oh my! We just got the new serger needles (the only needle that came with the machine broke while I was trying to see how much the machine could handle) and because it was so fast, serged every pocket insert that was already cut! And all you sewists out there - if you plan on using a serger for very heavy, thick materials and don't mind having a large dedicated sewing space, I highly recommend a used factory machine! When I called to special order the needles (most local stores don't carry them unless you're in a big city) they asked "How heavy a needle do you need? The machine you have will take up to an 18 - thick enough for heavy canvas." "You mean I could serge boat sails on my machine?" "If you really wanted to, yes ma'am." "Wow! I guess I'll just take 44's then."

Next project - our own tipi?

Thank you, Nikki and Natalie, for your help at the Diaper Derby!

The new serger is here! And even though it's an older style, because it's a factory serger it should last for decades and runs pretty fast!

Hope to see some of you at Our Lady on 3rd st in Harrisburg tomorrow morning! We'll be cutting and snapping - it'll be fun! You should come.

Wonderful news! Diaper a Day is getting (for a rock bottom bargain price) a COMMERCIAL GRADE factory style serger! The pocket stuffings, which were so thick that they damaged the old serger, will be a breeze with this machine. The only downside to this beast of a machine is that it will have to live permanently in my sewing room, as it's too large and heavy to transport to derbies. The upside is that anyone who would like to volunteer in the Harrisburg PA area is welcome to call and come over to serge, either diapers to donate or diapers for their own use!

Cutting and snapping.... come join me next Saturday - I could use the company! :)

02/24/2012

All right! We have a derby date! March 10 (Saturday) from 9am - 12pm in the Our Lady of the Blessed Sacrament church basement! 3rd and Woodbine in Harrisburg - We'll be cutting and applying snaps, so the needle-nervous need not fear (no sewing that day!) :) Please post if you'd like to attend - we really need at least 5 volunteers to make this a "go". Hope to see you there!

Got to a delayed start, but I sewed two pocket diapers so far today. Will post pics so you can see the pattern tweaks soon!

Welcome to 40 days of sewing diapers for the needy (otherwise known as Lent)! Here's the deal - we're going to be sewing and/or collecting cloth diapers, covers, AIOs, pockets, etc, and make a big delivery to Morning Star pregnancy center just before Easter. Last year we tried making this a year long thing, and even though the need is there continually, an short term concentrated effort is easier for most of us to manage and still does a great good. Comment if you would like to help, and watch for updates on when we can all join forces. God bless!
