Cardigan, Coverup, Duster, Kaftan, Kimono, Robe, Shawl. Whatβs the difference?
A cardigan is a sweater that opens in front. Your favorite cardigan might have pearl buttons and pockets. Unlike a sweater that you pull on over your head, a cardigan is shrugged on over the shoulders and buttons, zips, or snaps up the front or is worn open, with no fasteners at all.
A cover-up is a garment worn over swimwear, exercise clothing, or other revealing attire.
A Duster or Duster-Cartigan is a long garment that hits anywhere between the knee and the ankle. Original dusters were full-length, light-colored canvas or linen coats worn by horsemen in the United States to protect their clothing from trail dust. These dusters were typically slit up the back to hip level for ease of wear on horseback.
A kaftan, also spelled caftan, is a loose-fitting, long garment with wide sleeves that is open in the front. Kaftans can be worn as a coat or overdress, and can reach different lengths, from just below the knee to the ankles. They are often made from heavy fabrics like silk or cotton, and can be enhanced with a sash or belt and embellishments.
A kimono is a T shaped long traditional Japanese dress that wraps around the body and has distinctively voluminous sleeves. It is tied around at the waist with the Obi belt.
A robe is a loose-fitting outer garment. Unlike garments described as capes or cloaks, robes usually have sleeves.
A shawl is a large piece of fabric that is typically rectangular, but can also be square, triangular, or oblong in shape. It is worn over the shoulders, neck, or head, and can be used for a variety of purposes, including decoration, warmth, and religious or ceremonial reasons.
