Let’s talk about the immediate postpartum time.
While growing a baby inside your body for many months is a very gradual process, the physical and hormonal changes that happen right after your baby’s birth can feed sudden.
Throughout pregnancy, labor, birth, and postpartum, hormones are major players. Here's a brief summary:
🤍 Estrogen and progesterone rise rapidly at the beginning of pregnancy, and the body maintains high levels to support fetal growth.
🤍 During labor, oxytocin is a crucial part of the process, and the body releases the stress hormones adrenaline and cortisol, too.
🤍 After the baby is born, the body experiences a “birth high” when endorphins and oxytocin overwhelm your system.
🤍 As soon as the placenta is delivered, progesterone and estrogen drop quickly and dramatically.
🤍 In addition to oxytocin, the hormone prolactin supports milk production.
In the hours and days after birth, there’s a wide range of what’s normal when reacting to all of these hormonal changes. It’s normal to experience overwhelming joy and connection one moment, then complete exhaustion and nervousness the next. All of these feelings—or anything in between—are valid, and our team is available to help you navigate the magical, confusing time of postpartum recovery.
