Snack and mealtimes aren’t just about eating — they’re about connection, communication, and shared moments.

Here are 3 simple ways to build language and connection during snack time:

🥣 Pause and wait
Give your child a chance to communicate before offering more. They might point, look, sign, or use AAC!

🧃 Model naturally
Use short, simple words like “more,” “open,” “yummy!” "all done," and pair them with gestures or signs.

🍏 Follow their lead
If your child wants to explore textures or play with utensils — that’s okay! Comment, smile, and keep the interaction going.

✨ Every bite is an opportunity to connect, model, and grow communication — with or without words.

Speech sound development... what to expect and when. A child's speech may be delayed if he/she has not developed these sounds by the end of each given age.

Note: This post is meant to serve as a general guideline. Many sounds have a time range for mastery, and there can be variation among norms depending on the source you view. If you have questions or concerns regarding your child's speech development, be sure to speak to your child's current SLP or contact us today for an evaluation!

Less questions, more comments! Rephrasing your questions as comments is a simple and effective way to encourage more communicative responses from your child. Follow your child's lead and comment on what they see, what they are doing, or what they are interested in.

Check out our💥top toy picks💥 for teaching speech sounds, receptive language, expressive language, AND social communication skills!

Our favorite therapy toys all have one thing in common: NO BATTERIES! We recommend skipping out on the fancy toys with multiple buttons, noises, and flashing lights. When choosing toys to help support communication development, consider those that can easily be played with by you and your child together. Think “shared fun!” 🤩🤩

Recasting is one of our favorite evidence-based strategies for helping children learn to use correct speech and language. Recasting can be used by any adults- parents, teachers, caregivers, etc. during any conversational interactions with a child- at home, at school, at the park, or even in the car!

Does your child seem uninterested in books? Now is the perfect time to read! Choose a time when they're already engaged in an activity that they enjoy (e.g., eating snack, playing cars, or building blocks).

Point to pictures, provide short comments, reduce expectations, and have fun!

Foundational communication skills!! Our goal in speech therapy is not always to teach children to talk or say words clearly. Sometimes, we first focus on helping children engage in early interactions and respond to their environment before they are ready to use words. This is why it is so important to meet children where they are and work at their own unique pace of development! Questions? We'd love to hear from you!
