Hello 2nd Dan Black Belt! 🥋✨
I wasn’t fully happy with my test performance, but I’m so proud to have earned this milestone. Unnoticeable to the world, huge for me (only took 6 years 😅).

A black belt is just a white belt who never quit — and a 2nd Dan is a 1st Dan who kept going. 💪🔥

What Taekwondo reminds me: progress takes patience, discipline, and perseverance — in Taekwondo, in life, and in wellness. 🌿✨

🎉✨ Happy New Year! ✨🎉

A new year is a fresh start—a chance to reflect on what truly matters. One of the greatest gifts we can give ourselves is a sense of purpose: something to strive for and a reason to keep moving forward.

Research shows a strong connection between having a sense of purpose and better health and well-being. Cultivating purpose can inspire us, boost our resilience, and even improve our overall quality of life.

As we step into this new chapter, I wish you and your loved ones a peaceful, healthy, and fulfilling year—but most importantly, the joy of discovering your purpose in life (and remember, you can have more than one!).

Do you feel that having a sense of purpose impacts your well-being?

✨ “A black belt is a white belt who never quit.” ✨

Here I am at Master Yoo’s 14th Annual Taekwondo Championship, where I took home 1st place in both board breaking and sparring! 🏅 Competing, refereeing, and performing brought me so much joy. This event is all about fun, and everyone gets a medal—but that gold still feels incredible! 😍

When I started taekwondo 5 years ago, my youngest child was just 6 months old. I initially went to sign up my daughter, but somehow, I ended up signing up too! 😄 Huge thanks to my amazing kids who patiently came along to classes, long practices, and every event. (Well, they had to! 😀)

As an internal medicine and functional medicine doctor, life can get busy—but taekwondo keeps me grounded, focused, and strong. Remember, it’s never too late to start something new, to push boundaries, and to reach for those goals. 🥋🔥

📸 In the 5th picture, my son was too tired toward the end of the day, so I refereed with him in my lap.

🌿 Herbal Antimicrobials: Not Always a Gentler Choice! 🌿

Did you know that herbal antimicrobials like garlic extract and oregano oil can have similar effects on your gut microbiome as traditional antibiotics? 🤔 It can take 1-2 years for your microbiome to recover after antibiotic use!

This doesn’t mean we shouldn’t use antibiotics when necessary. They are crucial tools in fighting infections. However, we must be mindful of protecting and recovering our microbiome after any antimicrobial use. 🌱

What I want to bring to your attention is that herbal antimicrobials are often used without proper indications. Just because they are “natural” doesn’t mean they are always the right choice. Always consult a healthcare professional before starting any treatment, herbal or otherwise.

After antimicrobial use, consider extra tools to help protect and recover your microbiome. This includes probiotics, fermented foods, and a diet rich in fiber. 🌾🍶

Stay healthy and take care of your gut! 💚

🌟 Call to Carmel and neighboring cities: Want to make conscious lifestyle changes to invest in your health but don’t know where to start? 🌟

As a functional medicine doctor, here are my top 3 recommendations to get you started:

1️⃣ Eat More Veggies: Start by adding 1-2 more servings of vegetables to your daily meals. Most Americans consume only one serving of veggies a day, which is far below national nutrition guidelines and even further below what functional medicine recommends. 🥦🥕🍅
2️⃣ Improve Your Sleep: If you’re sleeping later than 11:30pm, try going to bed just 30 minutes earlier.😴🛌
3️⃣ Set Measurable Exercise Goals: Create a realistic and measurable exercise goal. For example, walk for 15 minutes on Monday, Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday from 8:30-8:45am for 4 weeks. Adjust the goal to fit your lifestyle and reassess your progress weekly. 🚶‍♂️🗓️
Pick one goal and tailor it to your needs. As you get more comfortable with your new habit, add another goal. Small, consistent changes lead to lasting results! You will see noticeable improvements 💪✨

👉 Share this post with friends or family who might need these tips, or plan to make these changes together for added motivation! 👈
I’d be thrilled if you participate in the poll and share your thoughts! 💬✨

🥦 How many servings of veggies do you currently eat per day? Participate in the poll and let me know! 🥕 (1 serving is ~ 1/2 to 1 cup)
I’d be thrilled if you participate in the poll and share your thoughts! 💬✨

🌟 Sağlığınıza yatırım yapmak için bilinçli yaşam değişiklikleri yapmak istiyorsunuz ama nereden başlayacağınızı bilmiyorsanız, belki bu 3 değişiklikle başlayabilirsiniz:
1. Daha Fazla Sebze Tüketin: Günlük öğünlerinize 1-2 porsiyon daha fazla sebze ekleyerek başlayın. Çoğu kişi, önerilen miktarın oldukça altında tüketiyor maalesef.
2. Uykunuzu İyileştirin: Eğer 23:30’dan sonra uyuyorsanız, yatma saatini sadece 30 dakika daha erkene almayı deneyin.
3. Gerçekçi ve ölçülebilir egzersiz hedefi belirleyin: Pzt-Çar-Cuma günleri, 8:30-8:45 arası 15dk yürüyüş yapacağım şeklinde.

🎶🌱 Music, Stress, and Wellness 🌱🎶

🎶 Sharing a special moment with my daughter at Carmel Music Academy’s spring concert! 🎵 It was her first time performing, playing the same song I debuted with over a year ago. The rush of nerves before every concert is real, but the joy afterwards is worth it!

Acute stress, like pre-concert jitters, is normal and fleeting. But let’s talk about chronic stress. It’s not just in our heads; it affects our bodies deeply. It can wreak havoc on our bodies, affecting everything from our brain and heart to our digestion and hormones and can lead to serious health issues like diabetes, heart disease, and dementia and more. In today’s fast-paced world, stress is unavoidable, but it’s how we manage it that matters most.

Fun fact: playing a musical instrument has been linked to improved memory! (PMID: 38281509) There are many other studies about benefits of music training on brain functions and reducing stress and with no adverse effects!🎵💫

Reflecting on an amazing weekend at Master Yoo’s 8th annual Board Break-a-ton event! Grateful to have been part of the performance team and honored to be a yellow belt level sponsor. A huge thanks to Master Yoo for this incredible opportunity. Together, we raised over 40k for Peyton Manning Children’s Hospital—an achievement we can all be proud of! 🙌 My only regret? Not breaking more boards! 😄

I promise no more Taekwondo posts for a while! Next up: my drum performance🙈 In just 2 weeks, I’ll be hitting the stage at my music school’s spring concert, where I’ll be showcasing a drum performance. It’s moments like these that remind me of the beauty of chasing dreams at any age. 🥁✨

As a functional medicine doctor and a black belt in Taekwondo, I’ve come to appreciate the value of pushing beyond comfort zones to discover untapped potential. True wellness encompasses mind, body, and spirit, and I’m passionate about blending physical and holistic health. Plus, let’s be real—I’m nearing 40 and constantly seeking to challenge my brain and body as a future investment! 😂

Yes, performing as an adult presents its own set of challenges, but therein lies the excitement—the opportunity to grow, evolve, and prove that passion knows no age limits. 🌟

Bu yıl 8.’si düzenlenen Master Yoo’nun tahta kırma etkinliğinde performans takımındaydım. Peyton Manning için 40 binden fazla dolar bağışlandı. Bu etkinliğin bir parçası olmaktan gurur duyuyorum.

🌱 Why I Became a Functional Medicine Doctor 🌱

Hey everyone! 👋 I want to share a bit about my journey and how I ended up practicing functional medicine.🌿
For years, I worked as a primary care physician, doing my best to help my patients manage their health issues. But I found myself increasingly frustrated with the limitations of conventional medicine. It seemed like no matter how many medications prescribed, my patients weren't truly thriving. They were still dealing with GI symptoms, chronic pain, mood struggles, and a host of other issues. It felt like we were just putting Band-Aids on the problem rather than addressing the root cause.
The turning point came when I realized that simply diagnosing and prescribing medications wasn't enough. I wanted to make a real difference in people's lives, not just manage their symptoms. I came across functional medicine and took a leap of faith and delved into the world of functional medicine. Functional medicine resonated with me on a deep level. It's all about treating the whole person, not just their symptoms. After completing multiple courses, I left behind the safety of traditional primary care and embarked on the adventure of opening my own solo functional medicine practice.
Functional medicine may not always find the right answer right away, but I appreciate that it encourages me to think outside the box. With a wealth of testing options at my disposal, I'm empowered to delve deeper, to explore every avenue until we uncover the root cause together. But most importantly, it has taught me the value of believing in my patients. In a system where symptoms are often dismissed or overlooked, I've learned to trust in the wisdom of those who know their bodies best. Together, we become partners in their journey to wellness. Today, I'm grateful to be able to practice medicine in a way that aligns with my values and allows me to make a meaningful difference in the lives of those I serve.
So if you're tired of the same old routine and ready to explore a different approach to health, I invite you to join me on this journey. And hey, if you know someone who could benefit from this approach, why not share this post with them?

Did you know that according to NIH statistics, a staggering 38.4 million people of all ages had diabetes in 2021, in the United States? That’s a whopping 11.6% of the population! 😱 Additionally, 97.6 million—more than 1 in 3—had pre-diabetes. And there are many more people who have undiagnosed diabetes.

But here’s the empowering part: We have the tools to make a change, and diabetes doesn’t have to be your destiny! Let’s unite to raise awareness and take proactive steps towards healthier lifestyles.

For many, simple Functional Medicine practices have been game-changers, allowing them to lower medication doses or even stop meds altogether. Set small goals for yourself, like walking for 10 minutes after meals, cooking more at home, eating more vegetables, and so on. Every step counts! 💪

Let’s also remember the importance of community support. Share your tips, recipes, and success stories in the comments below to inspire and motivate others on their health journey. Remember, you’re not alone in this journey.

💪Seeking personalized support for your health journey? Reach out to learn more!

Also, I am planning an online small group diabetes education session to help you learn more about diabetes, including pathophysiology and practical tips for better blood glucose control. Stay tuned for updates on the date and how to register!
