Call for Action: Ask your senators to support Title VIII funding by signing a Senate Dear Colleague letter!

The more signatures we can secure, the stronger the case we can make to Senate Appropriators to support the nursing community's funding request for FY 2027.

Meet HPNA’s Volunteer of the Month: Marika Haranis, DNP, FNP-BC, AGACNP-BC, ACHPN®!

Marika is the Director of Palliative Care and Co-Leader of System Spiritual Care at UPMC. She has been actively involved with the Emerging Leaders Group, Membership Engagement Council, and the HPNA Mentorship Program.

When asked about her volunteer experience, she explained "My volunteer work with HPNA has been one of the most meaningful parts of my professional life. I’ve loved being involved with the Emerging Leaders group, especially hosting social hours that give members a place to connect and feel welcomed. Serving on the Membership Engagement Council has let me contribute to strengthening our community in a more intentional way, and reviewing abstracts for conferences has been a rewarding way to support high quality education in our field. I also make it a priority to be available as a mentor, because investing in others—especially those just finding their path in hospice and palliative care—feels like the most important contribution I can offer."

Thank you for the incredible work you do, Marika!

What happens when the caregiver becomes the patient?

In the newest episode of Palliative Perspective Podcast, I’m Not Dead if I’m Still Talking: Behind the Film A Butterfly Has Been Released, filmmakers Barry Koch and Jason Zamer are joined by Angela Novas, Chief Medical Officer of the Hospice Foundation of America, for a meaningful conversation about the emotional and ethical realities of documenting such an intimate journey.

The documentary A Butterfly Has Been Released follows hospice nurse Allyson through the final 39 days of her life with brain cancer. Determined to turn her dying into a teaching moment, she hosts a living funeral, shares deep conversations with loved ones, and reflects on what it means to live fully until the end.
