These last few days I’ve found myself reflecting on Secretary Hegseth’s “no fat Generals” speech. This is not a political post, both sides hate you, get over yourself.
I get all up in my team’s sh*t, a lot. I demand the pursuit of greatness from them. It’s not enough to say that I earned the right to demand that from what I did before. I earned that right by waking up at 5 in the morning when I didn’t have to, to get my workout in because I have to meet the demands of my men. They have earned the right to have their sh*t pushed in at training every time by deciding to be SWAT men and trying to be better every day. I keep seeing this comment that the fitness standard shouldn’t matter for those at the very top because their job is different. I agree that their job is different. But that’s where my agreement ends. It is no longer their job to do the thing, but it is their job to inspire, guide, encourage, and continue to press the thing forward. How can that truly be accomplished if, when those being led look at the leader and they don’t have their sh*t together?
Also, at the top, one of your jobs is being the public image of your men. Whether right or wrong (it’s wrong) you are the face of your team. When you arrive on scene, all eyes will go to you and an immediate evaluation will be made. If you step in fit and confident, then it gives an immediate level of calm to the situation and confidence in your men. Now whether that is warranted or not is a separate conversation about your standards as a commander. Be the image your team deserves. No more fat commanders.
