As an industry, we need to look beyond behavior and start asking: Is this horse truly coping or just complying?
🔹
For those who place, train, and advocate for OTTBs, this question matters. The quiet, “easy” horse is often the one most at risk of failing in a new home.
🔹
Compliance can be misleading. A horse that appears easy in the moment may not be adjusted, just quiet.
🔹
The quiet horses are often the ones who slip through the cracks. They transition without resistance, but not without impact.
🔹
When we rely on behavior alone to guide decisions, we risk overlooking what the horse is actually experiencing. And that’s where long-term success can start to unravel.
🔹
Looking deeper doesn’t complicate the process, it strengthens it!
🔹

The quietest horse in the barn…is rarely the one I trust at first. Especially with OTTBs coming straight off the track.
🐎
They stand still. They don’t react. They do everything “right.”
🐎
And everyone breathes a sigh of relief.
🐎
Sometimes that horse isn’t relaxed. They’re… absent.
🐎
Still processing. Still holding. Still figuring out if they’re allowed to have a response.
🐎
No curiosity. No expression. No opinion.
🐎
And then one day…they start to come back online.
🐎
That’s when people say: “He changed.”
🐎
But he didn’t. He just STARTED SHOWING UP!
🐎
That phase deserves more attention than it gets.

When a horse is still operating from a protected nervous system, training can create apparent progress… while reinforcing tension beneath the surface.
🔹 When regulation comes second:
❗️ Tension patterns remain the same
❗️ Compensation takes over
❗️ Learning becomes reactive, and the horse may comply without truly softening.

You may get obedience, you may get the movements, and you may even get the "results" you are looking for!

But you are probably NOT getting the real change you want.
Slowing it down, way down, makes the difference from the start!

🔹 A settled nervous system allows the body to release, the mind to learn, and the horse to willingly participate and learn.
❗️ Regulation first.
❗️ Then connection.
❗️ Then development.

Taking the time NOW, prevents issues down the road!

We hope to see you there! A round table of topics where we all have a say and a way to share.

During a recent session with a newly off-track Thoroughbred, I got a few licks and chews near the end.

They were subtle, far apart, and yet he was still not fully relaxed.

But they still mattered. For some horses, especially in the early days, the goal isn’t a dramatic release.

The goal is to be aware of this: “I’m not sure yet… but I’m noticing.”

Sometimes the first sign of progress is not softness, it’s just the beginning of awareness.

And that is worth paying attention to.

Not every dysregulated horse is explosive. Some don't resist; they restrain
Some become quiet, watchful, overly compliant, and emotionally guarded just to get through the day.

That doesn’t mean they’re ready. It often means their system is still in protection mode.

One of the most important things we can learn from OTTBs is how to recognize the difference between:

⁉️ Softness and Suppression ⁉️

A horse can tolerate the moment without actually feeling safe in it. And that distinction changes everything.

I worked on an OTTB during his first week off the track, and on the surface, he looked “good.”
He was quiet… but he wasn’t settled.
❓What did that look like❓
🔹 He stood quietly.
🔹 He tolerated almost everything.
🔹 He was polite.
❓How did I know he wasn't ok❓
🔹 Tight jaw.
🔹 Wide eyes.
🔹 Held breath.
🔹 Restricted movement.
👉🏼 A body and nervous system still very much on guard.

I see it often, a horse that looks calm on the outside but is still deeply protected on the inside.
Quiet does not always mean regulated.
Sometimes it simply means they are holding themselves together.

Before strength, training, or performance can improve, the nervous system must first feel safe.

If a horse lives in a constant state of alertness, survival mode overrides healing, learning, and physical development.

Learn to see and feel the difference. Is my horse in a state of mind where he can learn, or is he so frazzled that he is only surviving in the moment?
