Access isn’t always static, especially for people with cerebral palsy, where movement, muscle tone and fatigue can change throughout the day.

As part of Cerebral Palsy Awareness Month, we’re reflecting on something that sits at the foundation of communication: access.

In our latest blog, Clinical AAC Specialist Becky and AT Specialist Anna explore dual access – the intentional use of two access methods – and how flexible options can reduce fatigue, improve reliability and support more confident communication.

Because communication systems should adapt to the person, not the other way around.

In the second episode of Start the Chat, Daisy and Eva share the heart that went into designing Aphasia Duo – a vocabulary designed with care, shaped by clinical insight, and built around real conversations.

Why Aphasia Duo? Because communication is a shared experience and support needs to focus on both the person with aphasia and the people around them.

Listen to this episode of Start the Chat wherever you catch your podcasts.

Meet Chelsea - a writer, artist and advocate.

Chelsea uses Text Talker in Grid for day-to-day communication and creative writing. She’s a published poet, founder of The AAC Four Seasons Book Club, ISAAC Canada board member, and host of the podcast 'The Whiskey and Tea on AAC.'

She’s also exploring Brain Computer Interface (BCI) with Grid, becoming the first successful BCI user (who is typically a two-switch communicator) to create a sentence on Text Talker using thought alone.

More recently, she’s been using our AI-powered Fix tool to support spelling and grammar.

We’re so grateful to Chelsea for sharing her journey. Read her full story and learn more about Fix on the Smartbox blog: https://thinksmartbox.com/news/meet-chelsea/

February's Course of the Month is ‘Supporting AAC Users and Mental Health,’ recommended by Product Manager Kim, as a course that highlights an area of AAC support that’s so important, yet often overlooked.

This thoughtful course explores the link between AAC and emotional wellbeing, gently encouraging us to look beyond vocabulary and consider the whole person. It’s an opportunity to reflect on how we can create supportive environments where AAC users feel heard, understood and emotionally safe.

Whether you’re a teacher, therapist, family member or communication partner, this course offers meaningful insights to help you support not just communication, but wellbeing too.
