Ah Spring... When the trees wake up and the farm starts buzzing (literally). This is the most critical time of the year for growing fruit.

As soon as the temperatures start to rise the trees come out of dormancy and start to bloom. The warmer the temps, the faster this process happens.

This year, we had a warm streak in March and the apricots (the first fruit to bloom) bloomed on April 13th, about three weeks early. A warm spring isn’t necessarily a problem, but it’s a problem when the temperature returns to normal (or below) after the blooming process has started.

It is 40* today and is supposed to get to 26* tonight. Fingers crossed that these apricot blossoms will survive the cold temps. Check out our stories for a more in-depth conversation about spring temperatures and the tools we have to try to protect our crops.

In the last 19 years, we have experienced three significant crop losses due to late spring frosts. We are talking about climate change because we are so incredibly vulnerable to the slightest changes in weather patterns.

In celebration of Earth Day, we, at King Orchards, want to express our gratitude for the Earth and the wonderful natural processes that allow us to grow fruits and vegetables.

Tune is this week as we post on (Instagram / Facebook) and on our stories about our relationship to the Earth, the benefits and issues we face.

Although modern farming has a lot of tools to assist, we ultimately rely on Mother Nature: the weather, and the unique ecosystem that allows us to be in fruit production.

Not only to feed our families, but our communities and support a stable Michigan economy.

We have an uneasy feeling as are faced with more and more challenges due to a changing climate.

That's why we are donating 5% of our Earth Week sales to the Michigan Climate and Clean Energy Summit - to turn Goals into Action!
