Sometimes families assume that if they have a scheduled C-section, they don’t really need a doula.
But the truth is… cesarean births deserve support too.
The role of a doula just looks a little different.
Instead of helping with labor positions and coping through contractions, I help families prepare emotionally and mentally for surgery, understand what to expect, and create a postpartum recovery plan before baby arrives so things feel calmer once baby is home.
With provider approval, I’m often able to go into the operating room during the birth, which can make a huge difference in helping everyone feel calmer and more supported.
And the support doesn’t stop there.
This is where postpartum doula support can make a huge difference while families focus on healing and bonding with their baby.
Recovery after a C-section is major surgery, and those early weeks can feel overwhelming. Postpartum doula support can include things like:
• Help with meals or arranging food delivery
• Light household help
• Running errands or grocery pickup
• Assistance getting to pediatrician appointments
• Lactation support (milk sometimes comes in differently after surgery)
• Guidance with bonding and recovery while your body heals
One of the most helpful things families can do is create a postpartum plan before baby arrives, so they feel supported and prepared when they bring their baby home.
Birth may look different —
but families still deserve to feel supported, informed, and cared for.
Doula support may also be covered by insurance. I’m currently able to bill OHP, PacificSource, and most Moda plans, and HSA/FSA funds can often be used as well. Oregon has also passed legislation requiring many commercial insurance plans to begin covering doula services, so coverage is expanding.
