KINDLY CANINES
This organization is an all-volunteer group of handlers and their dogs founded in 2003 by Marti Heater. OUR MISSION: Therapy dog teams will provide unconditional acceptance and support to those who desire canine contact through furry creative and educational activities and programs. HOW IT ALL BEGAN: Marti Heater, founder, relocated from the Quakertown area to Chambersburg in 2003 with her two dogs, Sammi, an 11 year old Golden Retriever and Callie, a 3 year old English Setter. In 2001, Marti placed her Mother-in-Law in a nursing home for special post-surgery care. On her first night, Callie then a one year old puppy went to see "Grandmom". Once they arrived, there were other dogs from the local Therapy Dog Group called PAWS with PATIENCE, who were there on their scheduled monthly visit. Marti’s Mother-in-Law began laughing and hugging the visiting dogs in her bed. The other residents also really enjoyed the dogs. Marti and her dogs were hooked! Having researched the Chambersburg area before they relocated, Marti worked to qualify as a "Tester/Observer" with Therapy Dogs, Inc. It was clear that a very large need existed in the area and she had two dogs that were anxious to start working. KINDLY CANINES MEMBERSHIP FEATURES:

Our hearts are heavy today as we say goodbye to our beloved therapy dog, Gabby. Our gentle giant moved through life with a quiet grace-patient, observant, loyal, and endlessly devoted to her family. People often stopped in their tracks when they saw her; their eyes widened with surprise and joy. Her stunning, fluffy white coat drew everyone in, inviting hands to sink into her soft fur, but it was her warm and tender spirit that truly touched lives.
Throughout her many years of service, Gabby gave her heart to our community. She comforted children in the courthouse, encouraged young readers in literacy programs, brought smiles to residents in multiple nursing homes, and brightened countless community events. She was also one of the pioneers of our visits to the local VA hospital, offering calm companionship to veterans who quickly grew fond of her. Gabby had a special gift for making children feel safe, often prompting them to scoot close and soak in her gentle warmth.
At home, Gabby was a faithful guardian. She adored snow, cherished her family above all else, and filled our lives with peace and joy. As we say farewell, we take comfort in knowing that heaven is a place overflowing with love-exactly the kind of place where Gabby would feel right at home.
We will forever remember the happiness she brought to everyone she met, and we will hold her sweet spirit close to our hearts always.
