Let’s talk shoes! Are you wearing the right shoes for your body?? Shoes should work with your body to give your brain a better SENSE of the ground.

Here is working with a 54 year-old female with a 20 year history of back pain and pain in her feet. You can see here she has tailor bunions, which are the bony prominences off the 5th metatarsal bones at the base of the little toes. She could not find shoes to fit her and ended up choosing a wide HOKA because this was the only shoe she could find with a wide enough toe box to not push on her tailor bunions. However, the HOKA was not the optimal shoe for her body to help her brain sense the ground and they didn’t help her back pain.

We changed her shoes and changed the way we laced her shoes - look close at the eyelet we skipped to relieve pressure from the shoe on the pinky toe. We also had Jim Fox with custom fit her with orthotics to support her feet.

Then we used dry needling, manual therapy and tons of breathing drills to help decompress her lumbar spine, optimize her diaphragm and pelvic position into better alignment. She is now pain-free with happy feet, and in shoes that her brain trusts when her feet hit the ground.

It’s important to work with someone who understands the mechanics of the human body and how shoes should work for your body and your brain.

We would like to introduce the addition of Devon R. Morris PT, DPT, to our One on One Team.

Devon, holds a Doctor of Physical Therapy degree from Ithaca College's accelerated program, where she excelled both academically and athletically as a collegiate soccer player. Devon has made significant contributions to her field, serving on the APTA Student Board of Directors and becoming the first Student Member of the PTJ Editorial Board. She completed an orthopedic residency at Emory University and gained valuable experience at the Atlanta Hawks Sports Medicine Complex. Devon is dedicated to ACL injury prevention and uses innovative modalities for optimal patient outcomes. She's committed to evidence-based practice and is also an Adjunct Instructor. Outside of work, she enjoys an active lifestyle, travel, and giving back to her community.
