Teens with ADHD & autism can become safe & confident drivers, but they often need more practice, clear structure & extra support building driving skills.

A few tips that worked well in our family:

1. Outsource & use a driver’s ed school-bonus if they have neurodiverse experience.

2. Extra time behind the wheel. If your teen is not ready at the same age as their peers, that’s not a failure. That’s wisdom. Skill-building beats rushing every time.

3. Level ups: once driving, start small & create a list of levels, once they master one level onto the next. Slow & steady will have the same outcome, but safer.

Tech battles with your neurodiverse kid?

You are definitely not alone. Kids with ADHD & Autism often struggle with transitions, impulsivity & that powerful dopamine pull from screens. A few tips to try in your home:

A written contract/rules
Visual timers
Anchor breaks with movement/sensory input
Schedule activities they enjoy. If they are busy, they won’t be on a screen

Tech boundaries are not about being strict. They are about helping your child regulate and protecting your peace.

What tips have you tried that work well in your home?

If the school says your child can’t be included, here’s what they’re not telling you.

• Inclusion is a right. Not a reward.
• Parents: You are allowed to ask why your child is being separated from their peers.
• The school’s convenience is not your child’s placement. They may have programs that would be convenient & MAY be a good option, but LRE needs to be considered by the IEP team individually.

When behavior is connected to a disability, discipline must follow federal protections. If your child is being suspended for the same behaviors listed in their IEP or 504, something is off. Schools are required to look at root causes, adjust supports, & services. You do not have to accept repeated suspensions, call us & call a 504 or IEP meeting asap.

ADHD Accommodations: Attention & Focus

Instruction & Assignments:

1. Chunking large assignments into smaller steps
2. Use of timers or visual schedules to stay on task
3. Allow extra time for tests or assignments as needed
4. Assignment notebook or digital organizer to track homework and projects
5. Testing in a quiet, low-distraction environment

Here’s a list of 504/IEP accommodations to consider for students with ADHD, primarily the hyperactive/impulsive type:

1. Preferential seating near the teacher & positive peer role model
2. Access to a quiet area for tests or independent work
3. Opportunities for movement breaks, best as leadership opportunities (pass out papers, run books to office, etc).
4. Flexible seating options (standing desk, fidget tools, movement-friendly seating)
5. Daily or weekly check-ins with a teacher or counselor

A Parent Input Statement is a document you, as a parent, provide to the school before an IEP meeting.

It shares your perspective on your child’s strengths/needs & goals. This helps the IEP team understand your priorities when creating or updating your child’s IEP.

Key points to include:

Strengths:
What your child does well academically, socially, or emotionally.

Needs/Concerns:
Areas where your child struggles

Supports & Accommodations:
What has worked for your child or what you feel they need.

Goals:
Your ideas for what your child should focus on this year.

If you’re new to the world of special education, it can feel like learning a whole new language. Let’s start with two of the most important ones:

IEP = Individualized Education Program
A legal plan that outlines your child’s goals, supports, and services to meet their unique needs in school.

FAPE = Free Appropriate Public Education
Every child with a disability has the right to an education that’s free, meets their needs, and helps them make meaningful progress.

Today I turn 50 years old & this milestone has me feeling deeply grateful. Grateful for the lessons, the growth, & especially for this incredible Shine community. What started as a passion to help families raising kids with ADHD/Autism & learning differences has grown into something so much more for me.

To every parent who’s trusted me with your story, leaned in during the hard moments & celebrated the wins big & small, you’ve made this work meaningful beyond words. You remind me daily why advocacy matters & why we keep showing up.

Here’s to the next chapter of helping kids SHINE. ✨
With gratitude,
Shannon
