This was a beautiful session where we lead the intervention Teepee from the Icarus model manual!! As you can see all the horses are very engaged in this artistic session with an adult client!  This brought about a lot of insight and healing to the client as we processed what this means in their life!  Come learn how to do Equine assisted psychotherapy with us as we train you in our model virtually or in person! We also provide consulting if you would like to learn these techniques per hour.

Freedom work is so empowering to both the Horse and the client! It is beautiful when you can show the client how their body has an influence on the Horse's body. If you look at the photo the horse is relaxed with his head below his Withers and he is blinking. This indicates he is in his parasympathetic nervous system which typically indicates to me the client is as well. Matching our horses in sessions can be such a powerful way to practice EAP!! This is what happens when you film a video with a mini horse... He takes out the skeleton horse that you had as a decoration because he wants to be the center of attention!!  We love providing enrichment for our horses in between sessions! Horses are by nature curious and when they live in captivity they don't always get to have as much enrichment as they would in the wild so we have to provide it to various situations!! 

Yoga is never safe to do with horses. I chose to work with my miniature horse with the large horses in a separate paddock watching! Check out our YouTube video for the full flow!

As a licensed professional you have to make sure you are practicing within your scope of practice but also within your scope of competency! As an LPC, I can treat eating disorders and substance abuse however since that is within my scope of practice, it is not within my scope of competence... I have not had upper level training in substance abuse or eating disorders so that would mean if I took on one of those clients and they filed a board complaint I would be sanctioned for practicing outside of my scope of competence... Please make sure you have specialized training in your area of expertise. 😇😉✅

When I do consulting with new professionals I always tell them to specialize in just a couple of things. When I do marketing with people's psychology today profiles I see them specializing in 10+ areas. There's no way to be competent in all of those areas and once we are in the field 5-10 years we should really have some specialties in mind we focus on. 🙌🏻

Clients are looking for specialists in their area of need so it is wonderful to find a few things that are within your niche and obtain a mentor and additional training in that area! 🧘😁🐴

Our main labels we treat are autism, anxiety and ADHD! I have spent over 20 years studying these conditions. The main modalities we focus on are IFS, somatic experiencing and Equine assisted psychotherapy! Find some modalities that compliment one another and run with it! We also use clinical hypnosis which is highly complementary to somatic experiencing and IFS! 

Thank you for practicing ethically as we want to make sure we do not do our clients any harm or put a negative connotation on therapy ...

These are my therapy horses after a very powerful IFS session we did while we added in a little bit of Yoga .....  Both of the horses are square (emotionally balanced) with one back leg cocked up in their "selves" processing after the session...  This is what we like to see after sessions rather than horses in their sympathetic nervous system which means they took on too much of the clients "stuff."  When my horses are too activated after a session I can do simple bodywork techniques (as a trained body worker for Horses) to help them release the energy they stored from the client. Our Halloween trick or treating social connection group was a success yesterday!! This is the 5th year we have put this on and every year it is so much fun to go out with the horses/dogs/clients and gain social interactions w/ the neighborhood while demonstrating new social skills! (Pictures of the staff b/c of course we can't photograph clients) ...

This is a great article on Equine Assisted Therapy and the high expectations some parents are putting on it. Yes it is amazing but it isn't quick like medication can be! It takes time to build rapport/form the attachment, reshape the cognitive pathways and demonstrate effective behavior changes. This study highlights some of the problems we had with our own clinical studies on The Icarus model in 2023!

Just hanging out with the herd on our day off! It was chilly this morning so they were a bit frisky!

When I go out to centers and teach them about best practices with horses I always try to make sure the horses have a good body score and a nice shine to their coat! Of course different breeds and different ages have different body types but we try to make sure everybody has their emotional and physical needs met! As you look at my herd you'll see the shiny coats along with nice muscling and a good body score. Fiji is an Iberian so he tends to be a little bit more bulky and round than your quarter horses! It is so important to assess your horses and adjust their feed every few weeks if needed to make sure they are at the optimal weight! Having your hair analyzed is also a great way to learn what vitamins and minerals they might be needing in a supplement.
