Dr. Trista Reid Honored as First Craver Professor

With the support and generosity of UNC School of Medicine alum Joseph M. Craver, MD ’67, the Office of Medical Education is proud to announce the creation of the Craver Professor Award honoring outstanding teachers in Internal Medicine, Pediatrics and Surgery who both inspire and change the lives of medical students through their teaching.

Julie Byerley, MD, MPH, Vice Dean for Education, is pleased to announce the first Craver Professor Award recipient is Trista D. Reid, MD, MPH. Reid is an Assistant Professor of Surgery in the Division of General Acute Care Surgery at UNC School of Medicine. Reid was a former Loyalty Fund Scholar at UNC School of Medicine, receiving her MD degree in 2010, and her MPH from the UNC Gillings School of Public Health in 2008. She went on to complete her General Surgery Residency also at UNC in 2015 and a Surgical Critical Care Fellowship at Stanford University in 2016.

Dr. Joseph M. Craver received his bachelor’s degree from UNC Chapel Hill and is an alumnus of UNC School of Medicine’s graduating class of 1967. Dr. Craver, a Cardiac Surgeon, enjoyed a successful career over three decades in academic medicine as a faculty member, teacher and mentor in the Emory University School of Medicine, Department of Surgery. When asked what his students would say about him he recently said, “They knew I loved them, that I really cared. And, that I cared about them as a person, and I wanted them to be the best surgeon and person they could be.”

Dr. Byerley stated, “The UNC School of Medicine is honored by Dr. Craver’s support of teaching excellence at his alma mater.”

Dr. Reid was awarded the Craver Medical Student Teaching Award based her evaluations from students in the surgery clerkship. In them she is described as “an excellent attending to work with. She clearly defined student expectations and always patiently answered our questions, even in the OR. She really helped us feel like part of the surgical team.” Melina Kibbe, MD, Colin G. Thomas Distinguished Professor and Chair, Department of Surgery said, “Dr. Reid is an outstanding surgeon educator. I meet with the third year medical students during each rotation and they consistently tell me how Dr. Reid goes above and beyond what is expected as a teacher and educator. She is inspiring and clearly serves as a role model to many.”

Congratulations to our very own Dr. Trista Reid!
