Berkeley Hospital is celebrating the opening of a new four-story, 94,000-square-foot tower that doubles capacity and expands specialty care.

The phased opening begins Nov. 3 and continues through early 2026, increasing the hospital’s capacity from 50 to 100 beds.

The first phase includes new Intensive Care and Intermediate Care Units. The 12-bed ICU now offers advanced treatments such as continuous renal replacement therapy, while the 16-bed Intermediate Care Unit allows higher-acuity cardiology and stroke patients to stay closer to home.

The tower is part of a broader investment in high-tech services across the Berkeley Hospital campus, including wound care and hyperbaric chambers, mammography and bone density testing, a new CTCA scanner, and future PET-CT stress testing at the Heart & Vascular Center. A decade caring for patients in the mountains of North Africa taught Dr. John Campbell an important lesson: the best medicine begins with empathy. Today, he brings that same spirit to his patients at Roper St. Francis Physician Partners Primary Care in Summerville.

🩺 Read his story:

A decade providing care in remote North African villages reinforced to Dr. John Campbell learned that prevention is the heart of healing. At Roper St. Francis Healthcare, he continues that work – helping patients stay healthy through attentive, compassionate care.
